About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Social Worker to join our team at the Department of Veterans Affairs. As a Social Worker in our Mental Health Clinic, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality care to our patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with patients and their families in the Mental Health Clinic.
  • Conduct thorough psychosocial assessments to determine the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their families.
  • Participate as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and collaborate with patients and family members to develop and implement a resident-centered treatment plan.
  • Facilitate discharge planning through collaboration with patients and their families, as well as interdisciplinary treatment team members, to ensure that appropriate discharge plans are executed in a timely manner.
  • Implement treatment modalities, provide counseling and/or supportive groups for patients and families, and evaluate/measuring outcomes to interventions.
  • Provide consultation and education to patients and their families regarding community resources, VA benefits, and specialty programs, as well as advance directives.
  • Consult with other treatment team and staff members regarding psychosocial needs of patients and their families and the impact of identified psychosocial problems on the patient's healthcare planning, compliance with treatment, and discharge planning.
  • Support the mission, policies, and procedures of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the appropriate Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN), and the facility.
  • Serve on committees, work groups, and task forces at the facility as deemed appropriate by the supervisor and Chief of Social Work Service.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
  • Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
  • Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.

Grade Determinations:

In addition to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates.

GS-11 Social Worker:

  • Experience and Licensure. Appointment to the GS-11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of one year of post-MSW experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the field of health care or other social work-related settings, (VA or non-VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level.

Preferred Experience:

Mental health experience

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands of the work requires use of fingers; moderate walking and standing; near vision correctable at 13 to 16 to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in on eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; hearing aid permitted; clear speech; emotional stability; moderate duty.

Ability to drive/operate government vehicle.

Education:

Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited.

A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work.
