Job Summary

This position performs highly complex public health work, providing clinical lactation support and counseling for WIC clients with breastfeeding problems beyond the scope of peer counselors or nutritionists. The IBCLC assists in training WIC employees and other healthcare professionals, and promotes breastfeeding through outreach to the community. The position requires working outside of the WIC clinic environment, including home and hospital visits, and may involve non-traditional work hours. The IBCLC may serve as a lead worker, providing direction to others and working under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assesses breastfeeding situations and provides counseling to potentially high-risk mothers and infants.
  • Refers participants to appropriate professionals for high-risk medical, physical, or emotional conditions.
  • Completes documentation as required, including lactation counseling notes and follow-up notes.
  • Changes appointment dates and times in the TXIN system as needed.
  • Assists with clinic appointment schedules for IBCLC appointments and pre-natal breastfeeding.
  • Provides support for WIC breastfeeding activities, ensuring the clinic environment promotes and supports breastfeeding.
  • Evaluates BF promotion/support activities and implements necessary changes to increase breastfeeding rates.

Requirements
  • Certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.
  • One year of Lactation Consultant experience in public health, a hospital, or private practice, or one year of experience in breastfeeding promotion, support, and counseling in public health, a hospital, or private practice.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • CPR certified or willingness to obtain.
  • Valid Texas driver's license and access to reliable transportation to all assigned work locations.

Working Conditions
  • Works mostly in a well-lighted, air-conditioned office.
  • May work in various WCCHD offices around the county and in a variety of community locations.
  • Occasional work activities may be outdoors, exposing the employee to heat and cold.
  • May have extensive contact with the public and contact with persons who may be infected with contagious diseases.
