GENERAL OVERVIEW
The Landscape Maintenance Specialist is responsible for providing essential services related to the upkeep of grounds and facilities, ensuring a safe, inviting, and visually appealing environment for all stakeholders. This role encompasses a variety of labor tasks, including but not limited to, landscape upkeep, snow and ice management, room cleanouts, furniture relocations, and the handling of materials and equipment. The specialist operates university vehicles and utilizes machinery pertinent to landscaping and maintenance activities. Work is conducted in diverse settings, including outdoor spaces, rooftops, and confined areas, under varying weather conditions and during emergency situations such as flooding or snowstorms. This position reports directly to the Grounds Foreman and the Field Operations and Warehouse Manager (FOWM).QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Candidates interested in the Landscape Maintenance Specialist role should possess a range of skills and experiences, particularly in arboriculture, focusing on tree care, pruning, and maintenance. Responsibilities include planting and mowing, thus proficiency in operating equipment such as mowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, and small tractors is essential. A strong emphasis on safety practices and adherence to protocols when operating machinery and working outdoors is required. Relevant experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or arboriculture is necessary for this position.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
This role necessitates effective interaction with tenants, staff, colleagues, faculty, contractors, and supervisors. Clear communication with management and team members is vital to achieve positive outcomes. Any equipment or safety concerns should be escalated to the FOWM. Candidates must be able to read and interpret basic documents and diagrams, including equipment safety instructions and landscape plans.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
The Landscape Maintenance Specialist is expected to deliver a high standard of customer service to maintenance and facilities, students, faculty, and staff. Services should be provided in accordance with established departmental customer service standards. Proactive responses to concerns and issues are essential, with escalation to the Grounds Foreman and/or FOWM as necessary. Adherence to work instructions and assignments from the FOWM is expected.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position involves working primarily outdoors, with approximately 70% of the time spent in outdoor environments and 30% in mechanical or office settings. Work conditions can vary daily, and candidates must be prepared to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and emergency overtime as required. The role may involve exposure to various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures and potential hazards. Candidates must be physically capable of performing strenuous activities over extended periods, including walking long distances, lifting heavy loads, and working in confined spaces.
