Mental Health Practitioner Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Mental Health Practitioner to join our team at People Incorporated Mental Health Services. As a Mental Health Practitioner, you will provide excellent client services at our long-term residential Deaf Supported Living program in Hennepin County.

Job Summary

This is a great opportunity to gain mental health experience in a community setting with deaf clients. You will work with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, using American Sign Language (ASL) as the primary mode of communication.

Responsibilities
  • Provide person-centered services to clients, engaging them in their mental health recovery and developing relationships that support their individual goals.
  • Offer crisis intervention and de-escalation services for clients experiencing mental health symptoms or emotional responses, prioritizing client and program safety.
  • Participate in coordination of services with other providers in the community to provide necessary resources to clients.
  • Provide skill-building, teaching, and coaching to clients as it relates to their goals and treatment plans.
  • Assist with client intake and admission paperwork, as well as provide program orientation.
  • Administer medications in accordance with organization and program policies and procedures, if applicable.

  • Ability to pass the screening required by Federal Human Services Office of Inspector General to assure the employee has not been excluded from working in the Health Care Programs which receive federal funding.
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Background Check.
  • Current driver's license along with a good driving record and valid insurance, if applicable.
  • Required Education and Experience for Mental Health Practitioner I:
    • Fluent in American Sign Language
    • Master's degree in a behavioral science or related field; OR
    • Bachelor's degree in a behavioral science or related field and proof of a practicum or internship that requires direct interaction with adults or children served and is focused on behavioral sciences or related fields; OR
    • Has completed 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in behavioral science or a related field and:
    • Has proof of a practicum or internship that requires direct interaction with adults or children served and is focused on behavioral sciences or related fields; OR
    • Has 2,000 hours of experience in the delivery of services to people with mental illness; OR
    • Has 2,000 hours of experience in the delivery of services to people with traumatic brain injury or developmental disabilities
  • Preferred Education and Experience for MHP I:
    • Master's degree in a behavioral science or related field
    • Bachelor's degree in a behavioral science or related field and proof of a practicum or internship that requires direct interaction with adults or children served and is focused on behavioral sciences or related fields
    • 2,000 hours of experience in the delivery of services to people with mental illness
  • Required Education and Experience for Mental Health Practitioner II:
    • Bachelor's degree in a behavioral science/related field and proof of 4,000 hours of experience in the delivery of services to people with mental illness; OR
    • Master's Degree in behavioral science or related field
