Position Overview
The role of a Middle School History Teacher at Uncommon Schools involves collaborating with grade-level teams to foster self-directed learning among students. Our educators are expected to master their subject matter while being attuned to the socio-emotional development of middle school learners. History classes are designed to amplify student voices and cultivate global citizenship through a focus on critical analysis, writing skills, and engaging discussions. By the end of eighth grade, students will be equipped for the academic rigor and independence required in high school.
Key Responsibilities
1. Instructional Duties
- Facilitate student-led discussions on historical topics, encouraging debate and critical thinking.
- Guide students in understanding authors' perspectives and the significance of sourcing, while honing skills in argumentation and historical inquiry.
- Implement a curriculum that highlights the diverse histories of various groups, including Indigenous peoples, African Americans, and women, and their contributions to the United States.
- Create an inclusive environment where students feel empowered to express their evidence-based opinions.
2. Data-Driven Instruction
- Engage in weekly meetings with leadership to analyze student performance and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
- Employ differentiated instruction techniques to meet the diverse needs of all learners.
3. Cultivating School Culture
- Establish positive relationships with students to foster a supportive and nurturing classroom atmosphere.
- Collaborate with families to ensure students have the necessary resources for their educational journey.
- Participate in professional development and coaching to enhance teaching practices.
- Contribute to school-wide initiatives that promote community and uphold our core values.
- Work with colleagues to set academic goals and refine instructional methods.

- Required Experience:

- Academic background in Education, History, Geography, Political Science, or related fields.
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required prior to employment. While certification is not mandatory for hiring, candidates must meet New York state certification eligibility requirements.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position ranges from $50,000 to $64,700, based on relevant experience, education, and certifications.
