We are seeking a highly skilled and certified Lifeguard to join our team at the YMCA of Western North Carolina. As a Lifeguard, you will play a critical role in maintaining safe swimming conditions in our pool, deck, and surrounding areas.
Key Responsibilities- Actively scan and maintain constant vigilance over the aquatic area to ensure the safety of our members and program participants.
- Know and review all emergency procedures, respond to emergency situations immediately, and complete related reports as required.
- Identify and celebrate the successes of members and program participants.
- Exhibit honesty, caring, respect, responsibility, reliability, flexibility, maturity, and good decision-making skills at all times.
- Wear required uniform while on duty, including a lifeguard shirt, bathing suit, and whistle.
- Report to duty on time and work all scheduled shifts, finding a qualified substitute and obtaining approval from the immediate supervisor if missing a scheduled shift is unavoidable.
- Attend and actively participate in all required aquatic staff training and meetings.
- Accurately complete and submit all safety and maintenance records concerning the pool area and usage of the pool.
- Inspect and maintain all emergency equipment and inform the aquatics supervisor and/or Properties Director immediately of necessary equipment repairs.
- Assist in membership retention by interacting and building relationships with members and guests.
- Initiate communications with the Aquatics Supervisor as necessary concerning program problems, personnel conflicts, and member concerns.
- Minimum age 15.
- Nationally recognized lifeguard certification, preferred but not required, training available for qualified candidates.
- Lifeguards must currently hold or be able to achieve and maintain the following certifications: Pass Skills Test, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Standard First Aid, Emergency Oxygen Administration ~ O2, Automated External Defibrillation ~ AED, American Red Cross and YMCA Lifeguard are accepted for hire.
- Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
- Hear noises and distress signals in an aquatic environment.
- Remain alert without lapses in consciousness for extended periods of time.
- Lift 50+ lbs. from the floor and 200+ lbs. in rescue situations.
- Sit for extended periods of time, including in an elevated chair.
- Ascend and descend ladders.
- Communicate verbally with good voice projection and clarity.
- Observe all areas of the aquatic area, including the pool deck, water surface, and pool bottom.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
- Bend or stoop to reach various height levels.
- Free individual membership to all YMCA of WNC locations.
- Discounted membership for household members.
- Discounted program fees (swim lessons, youth sports, summer camp and more).
