Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Clinical Research BCVA Technician plays a crucial role in executing standardized refraction and visual acuity assessments as mandated by various research protocols. Responsibilities may vary based on individual expertise and the evolving needs of the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates patient flow in collaboration with the study team.
  • Conducts manifest refraction and visual acuity assessments using loose lenses, ensuring compliance with study protocols.
  • Administers contrast sensitivity and color vision tests, along with other vision assessments pertinent to clinical trials.
  • Executes study procedures with precision and thoroughness.
  • Maintains familiarity with the vision components of all relevant protocols.
  • Utilizes manual lensometers to accurately read prescriptions from glasses.
  • Performs keratometry and measures intraocular pressure using tono-pen and Goldman applanation techniques.
  • Accurately organizes and retrieves essential study documents as needed.
  • Assists with various projects and other assigned duties, demonstrating creativity and initiative.
  • Obtains necessary sponsor-required certifications promptly.
  • Ensures all certifications remain current and compliant.
  • Maintains the visual acuity testing area in accordance with certification standards.
  • Oversees the upkeep of all equipment, lenses, and charts essential for visual acuity testing.
  • Maintains records of certified equipment and provides updates to sponsors and clinical trial staff.
  • Fosters positive relationships with vendors and sponsors, addressing any discrepancies swiftly.
  • Supports Clinical Research Coordinators and the Clinical Research Director as required.

Advanced Responsibilities:

In addition to the Level I duties, the Level II Technician will:

  • Train and coordinate certification processes for new Visual Acuity Examiners.
  • Assist in monitoring visits for certification of visual acuity lanes.
  • Schedule certification appointments with the certifying agency.

Qualifications:

Level I Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent, with relevant experience preferred.
  • Experience / Skills: Effective communication skills; ability to provide safe and appropriate patient care; adaptability to changes in protocols; experience in ophthalmology or optometry is advantageous.

Level II Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience / Skills: Minimum of 3 months to 1 year in a Level I role; prior performance reviews demonstrating proficiency.
