Huntsville, Alabama, United States Draper Labs Full time
Job Description

Draper Labs is seeking a Radiation Effects Engineer to support the development of systems that can withstand the harsh conditions of space and other hostile environments. As a key member of our Contested Environments System Analysis group, you will be responsible for assessing and mitigating the impact of radiation on system performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support engineering decisions based on radiation effects on overall system performance.
  • Design and verify the performance of systems across multiple radiation effects, including dose rate, total ionizing dose (TID), neutron displacement damage (NDD), and single event effects (SEE).
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure that radiation hardening is maintained across the product lifecycle.
  • Develop and execute approaches for addressing radiation-related challenges and independently execute assignments.
  • Contribute high-quality content for technical reports and presentations with minimal guidance.
  • Proactively identify needs and concerns associated with design decisions and communicate them to project leadership.
  • Contribute to the updates of best practices and QMS processes to reflect the most up-to-date tools and procedures.
Requirements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with multi-disciplinary program team members, program leadership, and non-technical personnel.
  • Excellent analytical skills to support modeling and analysis tasks.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, especially with regard to planning critical test and analysis activities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to balance multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Solid understanding of radiation interactions with materials and devices.
Education and Experience

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree or PhD is preferred. 3-5 years of experience in Radiation Engineering or a related field is required.

The ideal candidate will have experience evaluating electronic systems for radiation effects vulnerabilities, including single event effects and dose rate effects. Familiarity with radiation hardening design, testing, and qualification is also required. Preferred skills include familiarity with radiation transport tools such as MCNP and environment definition tools such as ASSIST, FAB4DA, and SPIET-D. Conduct Probability of Success (Ps) analysis for parts, including use of Weibull curves for SEE, is also a plus.

Applicants selected for this position will be required to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
