Position Title: Research and Development Specialist
Location: Kailua-Kona, HI
Compensation: $31/hour (Based on Experience)
Employment Type: Temporary (Approximately 4-month contract)
Overview
This role is a full-time, non-exempt position focused on conducting research in algal cultivation both in-house and under various service agreements. The selected candidate will report directly to the Director of Research & Development and will be tasked with cultivating algae at both laboratory and minipond scales. Responsibilities include collecting and analyzing growth and quality data, processing samples for internal and external analysis, and identifying and analyzing eukaryotic pests and weeds present in cultures.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage inventory of materials necessary for research activities, collaborating with the Director of Research & Development to ensure timely procurement.
- Maintain laboratory stock cultures of algae, including source stocks for production and research.
- Conduct intermediate-scale algae cultivation, including media preparation and scaling laboratory cultures for inoculation.
- Regularly sample cultures and perform analyses to assess density, growth rate, and other quality parameters.
- Prepare and send samples for external laboratory research as required.
- Collaborate with the Director of Research & Development to form teams for specific tasks as needed.
- Learn to identify eukaryotic pests and weeds, isolating them for further analysis.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and share relevant information with the Director and project team members.
- Communicate regularly with team members and stakeholders regarding project progress.
- Prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders, assisting with presentations and meetings as necessary.
- Work collaboratively with other personnel in the R&D Department.
Additional Duties
- Adhere to GMP and safety protocols in all work activities, contributing to a safe laboratory environment.
- Complete tasks as directed by the supervisor, ensuring appropriate budget allocations for core and externally funded tasks.
- Perform other assigned duties as required.
Physical Requirements
This position involves standing and working at a lab bench, as well as sitting at a computer. Candidates must be able to navigate uneven surfaces and climb ladders, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment
The work is conducted in a laboratory setting and outdoors in a warm climate. The role requires handling chemicals with appropriate personal protective equipment and may involve sun exposure.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, Agriculture, Marine Science, or a related field.
- Two or more years of laboratory experience and/or experience in algal production or aquaculture. Familiarity with molecular biology techniques is a plus.
- Ability to work efficiently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining confidentiality.
- Proficiency in mathematical and computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing work assignments.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
