Metallurgical Research Engineer

The Materials Science and Failure Analysis Section is dedicated to addressing intricate materials challenges through a blend of experimental and analytical techniques. Our work supports both governmental and commercial clients across diverse technical fields.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage in hands-on experimental and analytical projects focusing on metallurgy and materials science, specifically in failure analysis and materials optimization.
- Utilize a range of metallurgical laboratory instruments and methodologies for the preparation, characterization, and assessment of various materials.
- Collaborate effectively within a team and independently to devise solutions that meet the material analysis requirements of our clients.
Daily Tasks:
- Collaborate with senior personnel to conduct analytical and experimental tasks within metallurgical and materials science laboratories.
- Regularly perform characterizations and analyses using advanced instruments such as scanning electron microscopy, light microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction.
- Prepare metallographic specimens for examination through standard laboratory procedures, including grinding, polishing, and the application of chemical etchants.
- Troubleshoot experimental methods and data acquisition instruments as needed.
- Interface with project team members and clients to outline task scopes and schedules for technical deliverables.
- Provide consistent updates to clients through written reports and in-person meetings.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering is required.
- Entry-level experience in operating a scanning electron microscope and related EDS chemical analysis equipment is preferred.
- Familiarity with the preparation of metallographic samples, including grinding, polishing, and microscopic imaging techniques is advantageous.
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently and convey complex information effectively.
- A valid driver's license is necessary.
Additional Requirements:
- Selected candidates will undergo a government security investigation and must meet eligibility criteria for access to classified information.
- Candidates must be U.S. citizens.
