Position Overview
  • The traveling cardiac sonographer is expected to fulfill all minimum qualifications outlined below to be eligible for consideration.
  • Submissions should only include travelers who can adhere to the schedule specified in the posting and express interest in the unit.
  • This role involves independently conducting professional assessments and a range of non-invasive studies utilizing ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies as deemed appropriate.
  • Results from these examinations are crucial in guiding patient care decisions.
  • The sonographer applies cognitive sonographic skills to identify, document, and modify procedures as necessary to assess anatomical, pathological, and diagnostic disease processes.
  • Responsibilities include assisting with transthoracic echocardiograms, transesophageal echocardiograms, and stress testing, including dobutamine and treadmill exercise stress echocardiograms, as well as carotid duplex studies.
  • Preliminary findings from examinations are communicated to the interpreting and supervising physicians.
  • All procedures are performed in accordance with standard protocols for adult and geriatric patients, with occasional examinations on adolescents and pediatric patients.
  • Examinations are conducted using both stationary and portable ultrasound equipment.
  • The sonographer may serve as a clinical instructor for the UW School of Ultrasound and engage in the training of fellows, residents, and visiting physicians.
  • Participation in clinical research and acting as a clinical resource for staff across the system may also be part of the role.
Job Qualifications
  • A minimum of one year of cardiac experience is required.
  • Experience in an Academic Level 1 Trauma Center or a hospital of similar size is essential.
  • Prior travel experience is highly desirable.
  • Two completed references from recent work environments or assignments (supervisor or manager only for work performed in the last two years) are required.
Scheduling Information
  • Travelers are typically the first to float to units working with patients up to one year of age and/or based on their competency skills and experience.
  • Shifts may be scheduled across multiple units, depending on current staffing needs and/or various locations within the organization.
  • If the primary unit no longer requires the traveler’s services during their assignment, shifts will be reassigned to another unit to fulfill the contract.
