Job Summary:The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) is in search of a Food Service Supervisor who is deeply committed to their craft and eager to positively impact the lives of underserved youth in Arizona. The Food Service Supervisor will oversee staff and youth residents engaged in a high-volume correctional food production program, ensuring compliance with agency policies, laws, and regulations governing Food Services operations while preparing, portioning, cooking, and presenting a diverse range of meals for various dining occasions including Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Special Events. ADJC invites you to join our skilled and diverse Food Service Team, where collaboration in a supportive environment is encouraged.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee, assess, train, and mentor food service personnel in kitchen operations and performance.
  • Supervise and train youth employees on performance standards, vocational skills, and appropriate conduct.
  • Implement crisis intervention strategies with youth employees as needed.
  • Document reports, maintain logs, and ensure compliance with the National School Lunch/Breakfast Program (NSLP/SBP).
  • Uphold a secure environment in the Food Services Division by adhering to established security protocols.
  • Ensure food safety and operational procedures are maintained in accordance with health codes.
  • Manage inventory and supplies, verifying and ordering the correct quality and quantity as per standards.
  • Develop staff and youth schedules to guarantee adequate coverage during shifts.
  • Plan and prepare all meals, including those for special dietary needs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):Knowledge of:
  • Requirements of the National School Lunch/Breakfast Program.
  • Large-scale food production, food service equipment, and delivery systems.
  • Foodservice sanitation regulations and safety standards.
  • Inventory management and accounting methods.
  • Interviewing processes and evaluation techniques.
  • Proficiency in large-scale food preparation, inventory management, and adherence to food safety regulations.
Skills in:
  • Basic mathematics.
  • Leadership, supervision, and training.
  • Motivational and instructional techniques.
  • Effective use of computer applications (Microsoft Office and Google Workspace).
Abilities to:
  • Understand and apply Federal, State, and Agency regulations.
  • Comprehend and follow agency policies and procedures.
  • Learn youth management and intervention techniques.
  • Utilize radio communication effectively.
  • Implement security practices including crisis intervention and restraint techniques.
  • Understand educational vocational program requirements.
  • De-escalate challenging youth behaviors.
  • Work closely with adjudicated youth in a secure environment.
Preferred Qualifications:The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Experience working with juvenile or adult populations.
  • A minimum of 2 years in a high-volume kitchen (serving over 1,000 meals daily).
  • Direct supervisory experience of at least 3 individuals.
  • Knowledge of security practices including crisis intervention.
  • Familiarity with educational vocational program requirements.
  • Training in juvenile management techniques.
  • Security practices and key control.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish/English is preferred but not mandatory.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Successful completion of a thorough background check, behavioral assessment, drug screening, and medical examination.
  • Experience in food preparation from scratch, including soups, sauces, stocks, and presentation.
  • Ability to obtain a ServSafe Manager and Basic certificate within 2 months of employment.
  • Possession of a valid food handler's permit upon employment.
  • Current valid driver's license is required.

Retirement:Positions classified as Correctional Food Service Supervisor 2 (COOK SUPERVISOR) participate in the Corrections Officer Retirement Plan (CORP).
  • CORP Tier 3 is a Defined Contribution, 401 (a) retirement plan.
  • New members can define their contribution amount.
  • Employer matches contributions dollar-for-dollar up to 5% of salary.
