Overview:
The Clinical Nurse Specialist is accountable for conducting patient evaluations, formulating care strategies, and delivering exceptional nursing services to a designated group of patients throughout a specified timeframe. This role includes overseeing and guiding LVN/LPNs, nursing aides, unit clerks, and other clinical or administrative staff. May also take on the responsibilities of a charge nurse as assigned. This position involves providing care to diverse patient populations, including adolescents, young adults, adults, seniors, and pediatric patients.
Care Strategy Development
- Creates a detailed nursing care strategy that addresses all critical needs and issues identified through patient assessments.
- Prepares nursing components of the collaborative care strategy prior to the initial interdisciplinary meeting.
- Regularly reviews and revises the nursing care strategy in collaboration with team members as changes occur.
Patient Care Delivery
- Executes patient care as outlined in the nursing care strategy and interdisciplinary plan.
- Ensures safe and therapeutic care, seeking additional resources when necessary.
- Documents procedures accurately, adhering to established nursing policies and protocols.
Care Evaluation
- Assesses patient responses to interventions and achievement of goals with the interdisciplinary team.
- Monitors progress towards nursing objectives, making necessary adjustments on a weekly basis.
- Completes daily nursing progress notes and flow sheets for assigned patients.
Education and Mentorship
- Identifies educational needs of patients and their families, documenting their responses to instruction.
- Serves as a role model for healthcare students and team members.
- Facilitates the orientation of new staff through knowledge sharing and mentorship.
Communication in Patient Care
- Accurately communicates and documents patient conditions to relevant personnel.
- Maintains effective communication using both verbal and nonverbal skills.
- Encourages open discussions among staff and seeks assistance to resolve conflicts.
- Identifies unsafe practices in patient care and proposes alternatives.

- Describes experience with medical equipment usage and educates patients on proper utilization.
- Ensures that equipment is functioning properly to guarantee patient safety.
Order Processing:
- Shares experiences related to processing medical orders, explaining common errors and their corrections.
- Differentiates between standing and preprinted orders.
Patient Safety:
- Ensures safety for patient groups, responding to safety inquiries.
- Utilizes systems to document incidents and participates in real-time analyses.
Qualifications:
Experience: A minimum of 1 year in a relevant nursing specialty is preferred.
Education: A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred. New hires will undergo a preceptorship with trained staff and must meet organizational entry competency validations along with specific departmental competencies.
Licenses/Certifications: RN Licensure in the state of employment or compact, and current certification from NCC Electronic Fetal Monitoring (C-EFM) or completion of an AWHONN course within 90 days of hire.
Work Schedule: 7 PM - 7 AM
