Postdoctoral Research Associate - Hydrologic and Nutrient Transport Modeling

Job No: 532672
Work Type: Post Doc Associate
Location: Collier
Categories: Biology/Life Science, Agricultural Sciences
Department: AG-SWFREC-IMMOKALEE

Job Overview

The Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences is committed to fostering a community that values diversity across all dimensions. We encourage applicants who can enhance this environment through their research, teaching, mentoring, and professional contributions. If you require accommodations due to a disability to apply for this position, please reach out for assistance.

Position Summary:

The Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) Department, in collaboration with the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center, is seeking a postdoctoral associate specializing in hydrologic and nutrient transport modeling within the vadose zone. The selected candidate will be responsible for developing and utilizing hydrologic models and will contribute to the creation of a decision support system (DSS) aimed at multi-disciplinary projects focused on the development and assessment of water and nutrient best management practices (BMPs) across various groundwater conditions.

The postdoctoral associate will engage in data collection and analysis from multiple sites, focusing on soil, water, and plant metrics to construct models that predict subsurface water and nutrient movement in both well-drained and poorly-drained agricultural soils. This project adopts a systems approach, involving experimental work on high-value fresh market crops under varying nutrient inputs, irrigation, drainage, hydrologic, and climatic conditions. The associate will collaborate with a team of postdoctoral researchers, students, and faculty to integrate predictions of water and nutrient loss with data on plant, soil, water, and economic factors to develop a comprehensive DSS for effective nutrient and water management.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Analyze irrigation, soil, plant, hydrologic, topographic, and weather data.
2. Develop and refine hydrologic models.
3. Integrate model predictions with empirical field data.
4. Prepare detailed reports, manuscripts, and funding proposals.
5. Present findings at conferences and stakeholder meetings.

Position Availability:

This position is available immediately, with an initial appointment for one year, subject to renewal based on funding and performance.

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in agricultural, biological, civil, or environmental engineering, or related physical sciences. A strong background in hydrologic modeling and nutrient transport processes is essential. Candidates should demonstrate support for the mission of the Land-Grant system and a commitment to core values.

Preferred Experience:

Experience with subsurface hydrologic models (e.g., HYDRUS) is advantageous. Familiarity with irrigation management and machine learning models is also beneficial.

Application Process:

Interested individuals should submit their curriculum vitae and contact information for three references willing to provide letters of recommendation. Selected candidates will be required to provide an official transcript upon hire. Please note that hiring is contingent upon eligibility to work in the US. The University is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer, committed to non-discrimination in all aspects of employment.
