Cytotechnologist Specialist

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is seeking a skilled Cytotechnologist to join our team on a relief basis. As a Cytotechnologist, you will play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients by analyzing and interpreting cytological specimens.

The Cytotechnologist performs anatomical pathology procedures as licensed, requiring the exercise of independent judgment under minimum supervision. This role involves procedures that require a high degree of theoretical and practical knowledge, and expertise in licensed areas.

• Performs analytical activities related to microscopic evaluation and reporting of negative gynecological thin layer slide preparations and microscopic evaluation and formulation of an opinion for the pathologist of abnormal gynecological thin layer, non-gynecological, and fine needle aspiration slide preparations.
• Correlates current cases with previous cytologic specimens where indicated.
• Performs assigned pre-and post-analytical activities related to tests assigned, including specimen collection and processing, quality control, equipment maintenance, inventory control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing procedures.
• Performs and results molecular testing and/or ancillary testing from the specimen vials and correlates with morphologic findings.
• May assist in collection of data for research or publication of papers. Ability to read and evaluate published professional literature.
• Completes routine screenings for cell specimens, reports results, and documents daily workload records.
• Processes specimens for analysis, according to specifications related to the type of specimen.
• Assists in the collection and processing of fine needle aspiration specimens.
• Assists with data collection and special projects, as assigned.
• Demonstrates expertise in patient preparation, sample requirements, specimen collection, and pre-analytical factors that impact sample quality.
• Documents and submits required laboratory, departmental, and staff statistics/reports.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent.
• Successful completion of a 12-month Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited Cytotechnology program.
• Certified Cytotechnologist (ASCP) or equivalent national certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent as a Cytologist unless grandfathered per state requirement.
