Position Summary:

M. A. Mortenson is looking for a Design Phase Manager II to enhance our EV Microgrid Group. This role requires interaction with diverse personnel across various levels in a dynamic environment, demanding flexibility, resourcefulness, and professionalism. The Design Phase Manager II should possess a robust Electrical background and collaborate closely with Construction Executives to deliver specialized design phase services to project stakeholders and design teams. Excellent communication skills are essential for effective coordination in this evolving setting.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Guide team members in demonstrating resourcefulness and effective problem-solving skills.
  • Oversee the mentoring, management, and performance evaluations of Design Phase Managers.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with owners, architects, engineers, and trade partners throughout the design phase.
  • Understand and articulate the project needs, objectives, and requirements of the owner.
  • Encourage open communication and facilitate issue resolution among team members.
  • Identify and monitor critical success factors for integration into the project execution strategy.
  • Manage change decisions in collaboration with owners and trade partners.
Design Development Leadership:
  • Translate the owner's vision into a feasible design solution that aligns with project scope, budget, and timeline.
  • Provide insights on preferred construction methods and materials for inclusion in construction documents.
  • Support overall project constructability and logistics through informed input.
  • Coordinate information from design assist trade partners effectively.
  • Incorporate recommendations from trade partners into design documents when appropriate.
  • Lead the estimating team in converting design solutions into technical and financial documentation.
  • Prepare value engineering, budget, and lifecycle cost estimates.
  • Guide the design phase team in making timely project decisions to uphold the design schedule.
  • Coordinate efforts among multiple design entities engaged with Mortenson.
  • Review and submit design documents to the owner for approval.
  • Identify and coordinate initial project Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) requirements.
Consultant and Trade Partner Engagement:
  • Procure essential scopes of work early in the project lifecycle.
  • Develop a buyout strategy that effectively transfers design and construction risks to trade partners.
  • Manage budget considerations and recommend trade partner selections in alignment with project timelines and financial parameters.
  • Solicit, select, and contract designers for design-build initiatives.
Support for On-Site Project Teams:
  • Gather input from the team to ensure a unified project vision between design and on-site teams.
  • Ensure all necessary permits are secured prior to construction commencement.
  • Utilize standard financial and project management procedures to facilitate a seamless transition to on-site management.
  • Initiate and lead early coordination meetings among trade partners as requested by on-site teams.
  • Develop preliminary logistics and utilization plans until the on-site project team is appointed.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Act as the Project Manager until a dedicated project manager is appointed.
  • Mentor employees to foster their development and growth.
  • Provide design input to business development and estimating teams as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Experience in managing complex battery storage projects.
  • Strong organizational skills to handle multiple project tasks.
  • Proficient in risk management.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office, project management software, and relevant web applications.
  • Positive attitude and strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate company policies effectively.
  • Skilled in resolving cross-cultural conflicts appropriately.
  • Open to feedback and adaptable to change.
  • Effective communication and active listening abilities.
