Work Schedule: Part-time role with flexible day shift hours during the week.
The Public Health Advanced Practice Nurse delivers specialized nursing services in areas such as correctional health care, family planning, and the management of communicable and sexually transmitted infections. This role requires a high level of medical judgment to determine the appropriate procedures within the scope of practice. The Advanced Practice Nurse must possess advanced nursing competencies through additional education and training, along with a valid Nurse Practitioner license. Supervision is provided by the Nursing Program Manager, who evaluates performance based on results, case discussions, and progress towards established goals. While direct supervision is not typically a responsibility of this role, incumbents may guide and provide technical nursing instruction to nursing students in clinical environments.
Key Responsibilities

(The following tasks are illustrative and may not encompass all duties associated with this role. Different positions may involve additional responsibilities.)

1. Collect and document comprehensive health histories; conduct thorough physical assessments.

2. Assess, diagnose, and develop appropriate healthcare plans for clients; collaborate with supervisors, Public Health Officers, or other medical professionals as necessary; refer clients to external healthcare providers as needed.

3. Prescribe and administer medications within the scope of specialty practice.

4. Educate and counsel patients on preventive healthcare, health literacy, and family planning.

5. Coordinate additional laboratory tests and interpret results.

6. Maintain accurate client medical records and documentation; prepare reports related to departmental initiatives and activities.

7. Develop and recommend policies and procedures for the department.

8. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Duties

Incumbents may oversee the work of and provide technical guidance to nursing students in clinical settings.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform essential duties effectively. The qualifications listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required: Comprehensive understanding of nursing methods, principles, techniques, and practices. Significant knowledge of medical and laboratory equipment, testing procedures, and the diagnosis and treatment of communicable diseases; family planning; pregnancy health principles; and public health regulations. Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms; independently assess, diagnose, treat, and evaluate patients; promote awareness of public health issues; maintain accurate records and prepare reports; and establish effective working relationships with social service agencies, physicians, and other healthcare providers.

Education and Experience

A Master's Degree in Nursing; completion of a state-approved Nurse Practitioner program, specializing in Family Nursing; and a minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in correctional health care or nursing, or any combination of experience and training that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties described above.

Licenses and Certifications

Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Oregon; certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the State of Oregon; and maintain current CPR certification.

Individuals in this position are subject to drug testing and background checks, including criminal history investigations. A conviction may disqualify an individual from this position. Must pass and maintain Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) security clearance.
