Accounting Trainee – Local Government Reporting Section

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Accounting Trainee to join our team at the California State Controller's Office. As an Accounting Trainee, you will assist in performing entry-level accounting tasks, gain knowledge of governmental accounting, auditing, and financial reporting, and learn to utilize applicable state laws and procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Analyze less complex financial transactions reports (FTRs) submitted by local government agencies to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and uniform accounting procedures.
- Advise local government officials of findings of compliance and/or the need for additional information or corrections to resolve reporting problems.
- Communicate with accounting personnel of local agencies and report preparers from Certified Public Accountant (CPA) firms to resolve discrepancies or reporting errors.
- May involve travel to locations throughout California to prepare FTRs for non-compliant entities.
- Assist in conducting training or presentations to internal and external stakeholders, as needed.
- Participate in special projects, as requested, and provide accounting assistance in other reporting sections as required in meeting all publication deadlines.
- Team-oriented with the ability to develop and maintain working relationships to meet goals and objectives.

- Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of customers.
- Ability to perform well under pressure while working in a fast-paced and multitasking environment.
- Good work habits, attendance, and attitude.
- Ability to follow directions while demonstrating a high degree of initiative and responsibility in successfully performing the assigned job duties.
- Intermediate to advanced Excel, Word, and Access skills are highly desirable.
