Civil Engineer I, II or Senior Job Summary

The City of Overland Park is seeking a highly skilled Civil Engineer I, II or Senior to join our Public Works Department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing the design and construction of thoroughfare, street, bridge, storm sewer, and maintenance projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the design of thoroughfares, streets, bridges, storm sewers, and maintenance projects, including developing project scope, directing consultant selection, and managing plan preparation.
  • Manage the construction of thoroughfare, street, bridge, storm sewer, and maintenance projects, including reviewing contractor bids, negotiating material testing contracts, and managing construction contracts.
  • Participate in the development of the five-year Capital Improvement Program and Maintenance Program, analyzing infrastructure needs, establishing priorities, and preparing project addition and revision forms.
  • Provide assistance to the Engineering Services Division, Planning Department, reviewing plans, interpreting standards, and providing recommendations to address problems and issues.
  • Prepare plans and specifications for thoroughfare, street, bridge, storm sewer, maintenance, and other projects, coordinating land surveys and supervising engineering technicians.
  • Coordinate engineering-related activities with other Department divisions, City departments, other governmental agencies, utilities, contractors, developers, consultants, and others.
  • Develop project-related briefings for presentation to the Governing Body and City Manager, providing updates on project activities and making presentations to citizen groups.
  • Respond to public inquiries, ensuring that concerns are fully and effectively addressed.
Requirements:
  • Civil Engineer I: Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field, Engineer-In-Training Certification within 12 months of hiring, and a valid driver's license.
  • Civil Engineer II: Above requirements plus Professional Engineer registration in the State of Kansas or registration in another state with State of Kansas registration required within one year of hiring, and four years of experience in the civil engineering field.
  • Civil Engineer Senior: Above requirements plus six years of civil engineering design experience, three years of project management/engineering design/construction management experience preferred.
