Position Overview

Join the Vermont Secretary of State's Office of Professional Regulation in a pivotal role.


The Office of Professional Regulation (OPR) is dedicated to safeguarding the public from unprofessional conduct exhibited by licensed professionals through administrative measures that may limit or revoke a licensee's capacity to practice.

In this capacity, you will function as the Assistant Chief Prosecutor, leading a team of four prosecuting attorneys and reporting directly to the Chief Prosecutor.

The prosecution team represents the State of Vermont in the assessment, analysis, and prosecution of administrative complaints regarding unprofessional conduct across 50 distinct professions.

Many of these complaints may also involve criminal elements.

This role entails managing a vertical caseload, from the initial decision to charge through to appeals, in a dynamic work environment encompassing a wide range of intriguing professions, including Boxing/MMA, Veterinarians, Tattoo Artists, Body Piercers, Nurses, Osteopaths, Therapists, and more:

This position primarily emphasizes litigation within a substantial and diverse caseload; however, it also encompasses mentoring attorneys, participating in policy formulation, overseeing administrative and legal personnel, and collaborating with investigators.

Responsibilities include evaluating unprofessional conduct complaints and investigations as part of an investigative team, which comprises investigators and professionals from the relevant fields.

Litigation duties involve conducting discovery, managing motion practices, depositions, trial preparations, summary suspension hearings, and final merits hearings before professional Boards and Administrative Law Officers.


This is a full-time, exempt position. Compensation and benefits will be determined based on qualifications and experience in accordance with the SOV Attorney Pay Plan.

Essential Qualifications

Must be licensed to practice law in Vermont. A robust litigation background with a minimum of five years in criminal or general civil/administrative litigation is essential. Candidates should possess strong organizational abilities, proficient legal research skills, clear and concise writing capabilities, and excellent communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience in mentoring or supervising attorneys is highly regarded.
