Ultrasound Technologist Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Ultrasound Technologist to join our team at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center. This is a PRN position that will cover on-call after hours and backfilling day shift.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate and document all aspects of Ultrasound procedures, verifying appropriateness and preparation.
  • Provide patient information, including LMP point of tenderness, symptoms, allergies, or other information pertinent to the exam being performed.
  • Prepare patients for procedures, providing instruction to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety.
  • Assume responsibility for provision of physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures.
  • Select and operate imaging equipment, and associated accessories to successfully perform procedures.
  • Monitor patients during procedures, responsible for following established procedures and protocols, and producing accurate results.
  • Evaluate images for technical quality, assuring proper identification and image labeling.
  • Initiate basic life support action when necessary, and check and order supplies as needed.
  • Participate in data collection for department's quality assessment and improvement plan.
  • May be responsible for specific quality control duties in assigned areas, and reports equipment failure/problems in a timely manner to supervisor/lead person.
  • Assist in training and education of employees, physicians, students, and/or other healthcare professionals.
  • Provide input for purchase of new equipment and supply decisions, and provides input for hire or new employee through peer interview process.
  • May be responsible or assist in control of inventory and purchasing of supplies for assigned area.
  • Provides patient education as needed, and maintains knowledge of and observes universal precautions.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, prepared work environment, and prepares room for procedure.
  • Cleans and sterilizes equipment and procedure table before and after each procedure, and restocks and requests room supplies that need to be replenished.
  • Take appropriate action in case of fire or other emergency situations to provide a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Maintains current knowledge, certification, and licensure, and identifies learning needs in self and initiates actions to address these education needs.
  • Attends continuing education programs to maintain certification, and attends hospital-sponsored training programs as required by the department.
  • Completes all mandatory requirements, certifications, and licensure within allotted time for completion.
  • Works effectively within and between departments, and participates on inter-departmental teams and committees, communicating unit knowledge as appropriate.
  • Provides department/unit with information and knowledge acquired during participation with interdepartmental teams and committees.
  • Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff, supervisors, and managers both inside and outside the unit.
  • Responsible for following all protocols to ensure optimum image quality, and transport stable unmonitored ED patients to and from Ultrasound procedures.
  • Transport stable unmonitored IP patients as available and needed, and assist licensed practitioners with Ultrasound-guided interventional procedures.
  • Assist Medical Imaging front desk in answering phones, signing out images via films or CD, processing paperwork, and scheduling procedures as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of an accredited program for Ultrasound Sonographers.
  • RDMS (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer).
  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).
  • Experience in a hospital setting preferred.
