About DMC University Laboratories

DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a comprehensive laboratory network serving the hospitals within the Detroit Medical Center. Established in 1993, it includes Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, and rapid response labs, among others. Our service area spans Southeast Michigan, offering a diverse test menu with over 1,000 tests, including specialized options. We pride ourselves on our efficiency, with less than 1% of tests sent to external laboratories.

Key Responsibilities

Under general supervision, the Anatomic Pathology Technician will perform specific tasks across various stages of testing, including:

  1. Training staff on Anatomic Pathology and specimen processing protocols to enhance departmental competency.
  2. Assisting in troubleshooting routine processing issues using acquired skills and knowledge.
  3. Adhering to safety policies and OSHA guidelines, ensuring the proper use of personal protective equipment.
  4. Prioritizing and processing incoming specimens accurately and promptly, particularly critical samples.
  5. Setting up and maintaining work areas and equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  6. Collaborating with colleagues and Pathologists throughout the Anatomic Pathology workflow.
  7. Generating and verifying specimen labels to maintain integrity and accuracy.
  8. Assigning accession numbers and processing specimens in accordance with established protocols.
  9. Preparing specimens for reference laboratories as per testing requirements.
  10. Maintaining accurate records, including specimen logs and patient demographics, ensuring data integrity.
  11. Keeping the work area organized and stocked with necessary supplies, performing routine maintenance on equipment.
  12. Conducting quality control checks and reporting any anomalies to supervisors.
