5 East - Acute Care Oncology Unit
This unit comprises 31 beds and specializes in the care of oncology patients throughout their treatment journey, from initial diagnosis to end-of-life support. In addition to oncology, we also cater to patients with benign hematology and general medical conditions. Our collaborative approach involves a multidisciplinary team, including Oncologists, Advanced Practice Providers, and Palliative Care Specialists. Our nursing staff is trained and certified in administering Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy, with many holding professional certifications in Oncology and/or General Medicine. On 5 East, we prioritize the resilience of both our patients and nursing staff by fostering a supportive and nurturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist healthcare providers during routine examinations and procedures, ensuring the availability of necessary equipment and supplies during emergencies.
- In psychiatric settings, support patients in reality orientation, engage in behavior modification plans, and provide informal support therapy to patients and families. Manage potentially aggressive patients through verbal de-escalation techniques and facilitate age-appropriate activities for children.
- Monitor, collect, and document patient information while delivering care, promptly reporting any significant changes in patient conditions to a registered nurse or physician.
- Assist patients and their families during the admission process, orientation to the healthcare setting, and discharge.
- Deliver care and treatments as outlined in the care plan, including vital sign measurements, specimen collection, simple wound care, and support with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, and feeding.
- Perform indirect care tasks, including maintaining cleanliness in the work area, changing linens, restocking supplies, and assisting in the orientation of new staff and students.
- Reinforce patient education provided by registered nurses or physicians and document patient understanding of instructions.
Educational Background:
* High School diploma or GED required.
Licensure/Certification:
* Must be listed as Nursing Assistant I with the relevant health department.
* Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers is mandatory.
Experience:
* Minimum of six months of relevant nursing assistant experience, which may include completion of a nursing assistant course.
Skills and Abilities:
* Proficiency in verbal and written English and basic computer skills.
