Position Overview
The Commercial Portfolio Manager is tasked with supporting Commercial Relationship Managers and Market Presidents in managing client relationships at Midland States Bank. This includes nurturing the existing Commercial Loan Portfolio for market growth, evaluating creditworthiness to make informed credit decisions, identifying potential credit risks, and preparing loan proposals for presentation to the loan committee. Responsibilities primarily involve initiating and renewing commercial loans, along with necessary reporting and maintenance. This role demands advanced knowledge of commercial loan policies, procedures, documentation, and processing. A key focus is on fostering customer relationships and enhancing existing client connections through exceptional customer service and cross-selling initiatives. The Commercial Portfolio Manager is expected to embody Midland States Bank's vision and values, representing them both internally and within the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee a portfolio of commercial clients and loans (typically up to approximately $10 million).
- Conduct regular business development outreach (independently or alongside the Commercial Relationship Manager) to attract new business or enhance services for current clients.
- Generate new business through cross-selling initiatives with the existing commercial client base.
- Manage the credit evaluation process, identifying risks and mitigants for new and renewed loans.
- Provide customer service to current commercial clients, including research or referrals to other Bank Departments as necessary, along with follow-up communication.
- Assist the assigned Relationship Manager with client interactions, acting as part of a team and serving as a proxy when required.
- Order appraisals, environmental assessments, or other complex documents necessary for loan closing.
- Analyze straightforward credit applications.
- Attend and present loan requests at committee meetings, reviewing Credit Approval Forms for accuracy, compliance, and covenant adherence.
- Thoroughly review and comprehend formation documents for various entities, including corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies, and trusts.
- Oversee routine management and maintenance of the assigned portfolio, including the tickler system, financial reporting, and loan reviews.
- Manage construction draws if completed by the field on specific deals.
- Effectively communicate information and respond to inquiries from groups of managers, clients, and customers.
- Negotiate with clients on behalf of the Bank.
- Exercise independent judgment to plan and achieve objectives.
- Represent the bank in interactions with business associations, customers, and regulatory bodies, participating in civic and business-related events to promote the bank's image.
- Serve as a regional resource for training and support.
- This role may require occasional travel for training and team meetings, as well as willingness to travel periodically within the market as needed.
- May necessitate work in a Midland office to ensure collaboration and support for internal and external customers.
- Maintain compliance with all relevant regulations, including, but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, or Accounting.
- 1-3 years of relevant experience.
- Successful completion of bank training specific to the position.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
- Knowledge of commercial loan requirements and regulations.
- Understanding of all company loan systems for commercial lending.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
