Job Summary

MedStar Health is seeking a highly skilled Certified Sterile Processing Technician to join our team at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. As a key member of our sterile processing department, you will be responsible for ensuring the highest standards of patient care by processing and sterilizing medical equipment and instruments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Decontaminate, clean, process, and sterilize medical equipment and instruments according to established infection control practices.
  • Assemble and prepare instrument trays, sets, kits, and packs according to prescribed manner using content lists or set recipes as guides.
  • Wrap packages and handle them according to standard procedures.
  • Scan trays/sets one at a time, carefully inventory each tray/set, and validate containers/wrapped items to confirm filters, locks, indicators, count sheets, and valve plates are in place.
  • Mark items with identifying data and distribute or store in designated areas.
  • Consult with supervisor/team leader when unable to replace parts or when equipment is deficient.
  • Disassemble and clean equipment such as suction machines, IV poles, and monitors using approved disinfectants, detergents, soaps, and cleaners.
  • Reassemble equipment after cleaning and test for proper functioning.
  • Send inoperable equipment to the appropriate holding area for pick-up or repair.
  • Dispense products requested for sterile and non-sterile equipment and supplies.
  • Assign priority to emergency requests and issue them to the requesting department.
  • Complete forms for documentation or tracking purposes.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas and equipment.
  • Follow routine schedules for cleaning and maintaining equipment.
  • Maintain a safe work environment.
  • Maintain and clean shelves and work areas.
  • Apply aseptic techniques in daily work assignments.
  • Perform general cleaning of department surface areas, racks, shelves, and all storage areas.
  • Participate in educational programs and in-service meetings and workshops.
  • Work closely in maintaining appropriate inventory levels of stock.
  • Assist in ordering departmental supplies.
  • Participate in the orientation of new associates.
  • Provide feedback on the progress of new associates/students regularly.
  • Perform biological and chemical monitoring.
  • Perform visible inspection of sterilizers and report concerns immediately to the Team Leader or Supervisor/Manager.
  • Process all contaminated instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Check proper operation of the cart washer, U/S washers, Washer Decontaminators, dryer, and dumb waiter daily and report malfunction to team leader/manager.
  • Receive all completed case carts and attend to and process trays received.
  • Prioritize trays that need to be turned over.
  • Receive/process loaner trays.
  • Manually clean power tools, scopes, lenses, and other delicate instruments.
  • Maintain clean and orderly area.
  • Perform leak test on all flexible endoscopes prior to cleaning and disinfecting according to established procedure.
  • Perform water tests and record them accordingly.
  • Perform routine cleaning of equipment.
  • Sterilize instruments, equipment, utensils, and supplies.
  • Properly load sterilizer and set controls to specified time and temperature.
  • Complete appropriate documentation records prior to sterilization.
  • Read, mark, and initial autoclave printout to verify appropriate sterilization cycle and provide records for inspection.
  • Inspect items sterilized prior to sending/receiving to the appropriate department or area to assure integrity of wrapped items and sterilization.
  • Clean the sterilizer strainer.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certification.
  • CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) certification.
  • 2 years sterile processing technician experience preferred.
