Job Details

Christiana Care is seeking a skilled Mental Health Associate to contribute to the overall operation of the organization and provide exceptional care to behavioral health patients in emergency departments and medical units. This part-time position (20 hours a week) requires collaboration with healthcare professionals to develop patient treatment plans, diagnoses, and discharge procedures.

Responsibilities:
  • Comprehend psychiatric diagnoses and provide care to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric Behavioral Health populations.
  • Diffuse crisis situations, assist in calming patients, and summon emergency assistance when needed.
  • Customize interventions to de-escalate behavioral crises, starting with the least restrictive and most patient-centered approaches.
  • Enact immediate interventions, including verbal communication, calming techniques, and environmental changes.
  • Perform physical management, such as physical holds, restraints, or seclusion, or transfer patients to a psychiatric behavioral health unit.
  • Conduct serial assessments to identify challenging patient behaviors, causes, or triggers, and patterns.
  • Communicate patients' individual, group, and family behaviors to other healthcare team professionals.
  • Initiate standardized behavioral care plans and review them with the patient's care team.
  • Update Safety Plans/Behavioral Contracts and search patients' belongings as needed.
  • Participate in direct patient care, role-modeling behavioral techniques for staff, and offer debriefing, education, or follow-up calls for primary staff members.
  • Conduct formal and informal educational groups and related activities (inpatient only).
  • Assist in patient discharge and planning procedures, admission tours, and create initial Safety Plans/Contracts with patients (inpatient and PES only).
  • Perform Environmental Safety Rounds (inpatient/PES only) and precept new Behavioral Health Specialists, coordinating training with Educators (NPDS).
  • Assist with nursing procedures in the absence of PCT II and activities for daily living, including vital signs, patient hygiene, urine collection, Accu checks, and Breathalyzer (inpatient and PES only).
  • Handle crisis telephone calls (inpatient and PES only) and attend in-service meetings and unit meetings as required.
  • Monitor performance improvement protocol and compliance, submitting monthly documentation as assigned.
  • Serve as a representative on unit committees to provide input in formulating psychiatric protocol, standards, and procedures.
  • Perform assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices, and report any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations to the supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Cross-train to provide 'as needed' coverage for all areas of the department and support patients and families in the bereavement process for trauma codes/heart alerts when needed.
Requirements:
  • B.S. in Psychology, Sociology, Education, or a related discipline.
  • 1 year of experience in nursing educational groups, or A.S. in Mental Health Services or a related principle with 3 years of experience in nursing educational groups.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
Special Requirements:
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention within 12 months in position.
  • BLS Certification.
