Job Title: Assistant Public Defender

Van Buren County is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Assistant Public Defender to join our team. As a key member of our defense team, you will provide indigent defense and legal services to our clients.

Job Summary:

The Assistant Public Defender will be responsible for preparing, analyzing, and presenting legal strategies, as well as advising clients on their legal rights. You will appear at all levels of the trial court hearings, including arraignments, probable cause conferences, and trials. Your expertise will be essential in ensuring that our clients receive the best possible defense.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement effective legal strategies for clients
  • Prepare and present legal research and arguments to the courts
  • Conduct investigations and interviews with clients, witnesses, and other relevant individuals
  • Stay up-to-date with legal knowledge and technical skills to ensure the best possible defense
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure efficient preparation and delivery of files
  • Recruit and train new Holistic Defense Partner positions
  • Supervise and evaluate intern/volunteer workforce
  • Litigate legal issues and bring cases to trial as necessary
Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor Degree
  • Active membership in the Michigan State Bar
  • Two (2) years of experience as a prosecutor, public defender, private criminal defense practitioner, legal intern, or law clerk
Requirements:
  • Background check, criminal history, and drug screen
  • Completion of County application form
Work Environment:

This role operates in a professional office environment and requires regular use of standard office equipment. The physical demands of this job include expressing oneself verbally and in writing, moving about the office environment, and performing filing tasks.

This position reports to the Deputy Chief Public Defender and may require travel to Van Buren County buildings for job duties.
