Clinical Laboratory Specialist Team Leader

Job SummaryThe Clinical Laboratory Specialist Team Leader performs complex pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic processes, and may perform specimen collection. Uses established knowledge base of clinical indications for laboratory testing and processing.
Key Accountabilities:- Performs complex processes including collecting bone marrow, performing and staining pathology frozen specimens, performing EKGs, processing and resulting send outs, and resulting moderately complex testing.
- Obtains specimens from inpatients and outpatients following proper identification protocols and appropriate techniques to maintain the integrity of the specimens and prioritizes collections to meet established turnaround times.
- Supports patient testing by performing waived testing, loading analyzers, and performing lab functions, as needed, to meet patient demands.
- Adheres to OSHA and ThedaCare department policies for specimen collection and handling to ensure a safe work environment.
- Provides training for new lab and non-lab team members to retain top talent.
- Performs specimen-related computer functions with accuracy and speed including entering physician's orders, processing cancelations, and entering add-on tests to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Enters, activates, and/or reviews physician's order in the system with accuracy for patient safety and quality.
- Maintains supplies and assists with inventory and ordering to ensure the availability of supplies to perform patient care responsibilities.
- Performs special specimen collections (i.e., legal specimen collections) to support patient testing and follow up as required by law.
- Collaborates with multiple disciplines to effectively and efficiently provide patient care and achieve the desired patient outcomes.
- Applies critical thinking to assess, plan, and implement day-to-day operations, and communicates updates to team members.
- Delegates team member duties in relation to patient needs, and manages evolving demands from team members, physicians, equipment, and scheduling.
- Manages call schedule, revenue and usage audits, and meeting minutes, and is a super user with department diagnostic equipment and supplies.
- High School diploma or GED preferred
- Must be 18 years of age
- Four years of laboratory experience or a Bachelor's degree
- Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance
- Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties
- Works in a medical setting with high risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, chemicals, and biohazardous materials
- Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments
- Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock
- Occasional contact with aggressive and or combative patients
- Use of computers throughout the work day
- Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers
