SPACE SYSTEMS TEAM
The Space Systems team at Rocket Lab is tasked with the design and development of all satellite systems and components. This includes everything from complete satellites intended for lunar and Martian missions to individual components such as solar panels, flight software, and communication systems. Our team comprises skilled engineers, technicians, and designers dedicated to crafting cutting-edge satellite solutions for commercial, governmental, and defense applications.
ROLE OVERVIEW: PRINCIPAL SPACECRAFT GNC ENGINEER/LEAD
Operating from Rocket Lab's headquarters, the Principal Spacecraft GNC Engineer/Lead will spearhead the development of Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) systems for our diverse spacecraft fleet. This role requires a deep understanding of GNC principles and their practical applications. You will engage in all stages of the engineering lifecycle, including spacecraft conceptualization, algorithm creation, flight software deployment, subsystem requirement formulation, detailed GNC design, and integration and testing of both subsystems and vehicles. Additionally, you will oversee the development schedule to ensure timely execution of innovative programs and products, collaborating closely with teams across Systems, Avionics, Flight Software, Mission Operations, and Ground Software.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead a dedicated team in GNC design, modeling, and analysis for various spacecraft and missions, including LEO, MEO, GEO, Lunar, and Interplanetary operations.
- Develop flight software, algorithms, and simulation tools.
- Create spacecraft autonomy solutions for effective constellation management.
- Oversee GNC component selection and subsystem design.
- Establish and execute testing processes.
- Define and implement fault detection and response strategies.
- Conduct hardware-in-the-loop and Monte Carlo simulations.
- Integrate flight and simulation software with advanced analysis and testing tools.
- Support internal and external design evaluations.
- Collaborate with department leads and program managers to maintain project schedules and report on technical progress.
- Coordinate efforts with teams located in different regions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, computer science, or a related technical field.
- Over 10 years of experience with C++ or a similar object-oriented programming language.
- Minimum of 3 years in the aerospace industry, specifically in spacecraft or satellite development.
- Familiarity with GNC sensors and actuators.
- Proficient in MATLAB, Python, or similar programming environments.
- Experience leading teams with three or more direct reports.
- History of engaging with aerospace clients in both commercial and governmental sectors.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced degrees (MS or PhD) in relevant fields.
- Experience with Jira for project planning and workflow management.
- Hands-on experience with GNC hardware such as IMUs, reaction wheels, and star trackers.
- Expertise in developing blended attitude solutions from diverse sensor data.
- Proven track record in developing, implementing, and verifying flight software.
- Experience with spacecraft on-orbit operations and troubleshooting.
- Prior experience leading teams through various project phases.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively.
- Background in GNC-related business development or conceptual design.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Vision requirements include close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus.
- Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer equipment, and communicate effectively.
- Must be able to commute to various facilities.
- Occasional exposure to dust, fumes, and moderate noise levels.
