Key Responsibilities

DISH is seeking a Senior Spacecraft Engineer responsible for planning, supporting, executing, and supervising TT&C and spacecraft subsystem operations. This includes spacecraft commanding and stationkeeping activities aligned with both scheduled and dynamic operational requirements. The role involves trending and analyzing spacecraft health data, preparing reports, and communicating the status of spacecraft, projects, and operational activities across all organizational levels while emphasizing customer service. The engineer will also engage in activities to enhance team and personal job skills and professional knowledge.

Specific Duties Include:
  • Assess spacecraft performance and troubleshoot all spacecraft subsystems to enhance service quality and prolong mission life.
  • Maintain and reinforce situational awareness of spacecraft and broadcast operations, company goals, and advancements in the spacecraft and communication sectors.
  • Provide guidance and support to spacecraft controllers during operational tasks.
  • Deliver 24x7 on-call engineering support on a rotating schedule; respond to anomalies, guide controllers, and initiate anomaly resolution efforts.
  • Create, review, manage, and optimize spacecraft procedures, tools, and processes essential for the safe and efficient execution of operational tasks.
  • Review, edit, and publish the operations activity schedule.
  • Update and assess spacecraft status reports.
  • Plan and direct complex payload reconfigurations to facilitate broadcast operations.
  • Support new spacecraft development initiatives.
  • Analyze design documentation to confirm requirements, participate in ground testing of new spacecraft, and manage in-orbit test and evaluation activities.
  • Investigate and analyze both long- and short-term spacecraft performance trends.
  • Establish standards for monitoring all spacecraft subsystems.
  • Oversee, plan, and execute spacecraft maneuvers, including maneuver reconstruction, orbit determination, and preparation of long-term orbit strategies.
  • Direct the planning and execution of spacecraft orbital relocation operations as needed.
  • Research, develop, and present intermediate-level training materials to meet initial or recurring requirements.
  • Conceptualize, develop, and review new processes, methods, scripts, and tools utilized by both engineering and operations teams.
  • May assist with the hiring, onboarding, and mentoring of interns or junior engineers, including guiding and assigning work as necessary.
  • Apply experience and professional judgment to evaluate, create, and implement innovative strategies to support dynamic operational needs.
  • Organize projects involving multiple subsystems or functional areas.
  • Coordinate with external parties.
Work Environment:

The dedicated workspace is adjacent to a 24x7 operations center. Typically, work is conducted Monday through Friday during standard business hours, but the engineer must be available for work and on-call duties during off-hours, weekends, and holidays as dictated by the needs of a 24x7 operation. Up to 10% travel may be required.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in engineering, physics, or mathematics from an accredited four-year institution.
  • 6+ years of spacecraft engineering experience directly related to satellite industries.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Must be a U.S. Person (a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident) as the position requires access to U.S. export-restricted materials.
  • Able to fulfill a 24x7 on-call rotation and respond onsite within 30 minutes.
  • Strong mathematical skills, including the ability to work with concepts such as probability, statistical inference, calculus, and geometry.
  • Proficient in applying engineering principles and scientific methods to real-world engineering challenges.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid engineering conclusions.
  • Capable of interpreting a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
  • Experience with MAXAR FS1300 or Lockheed Martin A2100 spacecraft is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with Kratos ISI EPOCH TT&C and OASYS, MATLAB, and AGI STK software is a plus.
  • General or specialized knowledge in spacecraft subsystems such as Attitude Control, Propulsion, Power, Data Handling, Thermal, Mechanisms, TT&C, Payload, Flight Dynamics, and Orbit Mechanics is advantageous.
  • Detail-oriented, proactive, and confident with strong communication skills.
  • Able to collaborate in a multi-team environment to achieve objectives.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey technical problems and concepts to diverse audiences.
