Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Optical Communications Engineer to join our team at MITRE. As a key member of our Quantum Information Sciences, Optics, and Imaging Department, you will play a critical role in designing and assessing optical communications systems, including free space laser communications and fiber communications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the analysis of various free space and fiber optical communications systems, addressing integration challenges and providing recommendations to sponsors.
  • Apply advanced analytic techniques to evaluate the impact of optical communications systems on operational capabilities and missions.
  • Develop and assess innovative communications systems for diverse missions and applications.
  • Contribute to other optics projects, such as imaging and directed energy, and communication-related tasks, including RF and waveform development.
  • Engage with sponsors, stakeholders, and partners to ensure optics technologies meet mission requirements.
  • Assemble and integrate optical communications hardware for lab-based research, development, and testing.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years with a Master's degree; or a Ph.D. without prior experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience.
  • In-depth technical knowledge of optical engineering, optoelectronic devices, laser systems, optomechanics, and optical waveforms.
  • Familiarity with laboratory work involving optical systems, encompassing research, development, and testing.
  • Strong skills in technical writing and oral presentations.
  • Ability to research and analyze optical communications systems in a collaborative setting.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and a proactive approach to research and problem-solving with minimal supervision.
  • Capability to secure and maintain a Secret security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Optical Science, Physics, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Hands-on experience in designing and evaluating free space and fiber optical communications systems.
  • Experience with directed energy, imaging, sensing, and computer vision systems.
  • Expertise in designing and evaluating cross-cutting imaging technologies for defense, intelligence, transportation, or health sectors.
  • Capability to secure and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with additional accesses.
