Position Overview

Primary Responsibilities

The individual in this role will support the physician and/or Advanced Care Practitioner (ACP) in delivering patient care, managing patient intake during office visits, maintaining documentation, administering vaccines and medications, and performing clerical, environmental, and organizational duties. Responsibilities also include scheduling appointments and managing medical records.

Key Duties

  • Exhibits the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care across various patient demographics, including newborns, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors, relevant to the specialty of the practice.
  • Engages in pre-visit planning with the healthcare provider and care team.
  • Adheres to established patient intake and rooming protocols.
  • May involve administering medications, including injections.
  • Measures and records vital signs, height, and weight.
  • Assists in reviewing medication history and updating the medication list.
  • Supports the fulfillment of essential health maintenance requirements.
  • Conducts Point of Care Testing (POCT) as per standing orders or provider directives.
  • Follows standard precautions and complies with relevant policies and regulatory standards, including OSHA, CLIA, and TJC.
  • Reports patient conditions and reactions to the provider after procedures, medication administration, or treatments.
  • Assists patients with inquiries regarding prescription refills, appointment scheduling, and referral authorizations.
  • Participates in electronic documentation of patient care as directed by the provider.
  • Conducts CLIA-approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in compliance with CLIA standards. Performs quality control and maintenance for in-office lab procedures as necessary.
  • Executes venipuncture and may assist in collecting specimens for laboratory testing, ensuring proper completion of lab requisitions and specimen preparation for pickup.
  • Monitors and manages inventory of medications, narcotics, and emergency supplies specific to the practice.
  • Ensures tracking and logging of all ordered laboratory and diagnostic tests, presenting results to the provider.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification is mandatory and must be maintained.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Intermediate EMT or Paramedic Program with three years of prior clinical experience.
  • Structured military training with clinical relevance per DD214.
  • Graduation from an Accredited School of Professional Nursing.
  • Three years of on-the-job training with successful completion of a competency assessment approved by CHS Medical Group.

Certification / License

Must be recognized or certified as a CMA or RMA by one of the following national organizations:

  • American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
  • National HealthCareer Association (NHA)
  • National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA)
  • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
  • American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
  • National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA)

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This position requires consistent walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling. The ability to lift and support up to 35 pounds is necessary for handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies. There may be exposure to communicable diseases. Proficiency in basic English, including speaking, reading, and writing, is essential. The role requires intact senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch, along with manual dexterity.
