Drilling Operations Specialist

Patterson-UTI Drilling is currently hiring for a skilled Derrickhand to join our team in the North Dakota region. As a key member of our drilling operations, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient completion of drilling projects.
This position requires a high level of physical fitness, as you will be working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment that involves standing for long periods, climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting heavy equipment. You must also be comfortable working at heights of 50 feet or greater and be able to lift and carry 50 pounds independently while walking on uneven surfaces.
The Derrickhand is responsible for maintaining the mud systems, including measuring mud weight and viscosity, mixing chemicals, and ensuring the proper functioning of mud pumps, shakers, and tanks. You will also work closely with Floorhands and Motorhands to ensure the smooth operation of the drilling rig.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor and maintain the mud systems, including measuring mud weight and viscosity
- Mix chemicals and ensure the proper functioning of mud pumps, shakers, and tanks
- Work closely with Floorhands and Motorhands to ensure the smooth operation of the drilling rig
- Stand or stand and walk for extended periods while wearing steel-toed boots
- Climb steep stairs and ladders regularly
- Utilize heavy-duty handheld and long-handled tools
- Communicate effectively with team members using proper hand signals
- Take initiative and work independently during downtime
- Demonstrate clear communication skills, including reading, writing, and speaking English
- Frequently measure mud weight and viscosity using a scale and timer
- Regularly inspect and maintain mud systems, including mud levels, pumps, shakers, and tanks
- Check the rig and equipment for problems and safety issues on an ongoing basis
- Perform preventative maintenance on all equipment above the rig floor and associated with the drilling fluid system
- General upkeep of the rig and drilling floor, including sweeping, shoveling, cleaning, painting, washing of equipment, and related housekeeping duties
- Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all designated times
- Inspect derrick components regularly
- Work in a heavy industrial environment with moving overhead machinery, potentially hazardous chemicals, and loud equipment
- Perform daily inspections of critical equipment
- Follow instructions from Mud Engineers and Drillers to ensure operational mud systems
- Handle and mix hazardous chemicals into the mud
- Prepare stands and steady pipe during drilling activities
- Ensure correct mud pit valves are open/closed
- Monitor Floorhands assisting in pits or chemical sacks
- General upkeep and housekeeping of mud pit area
- Assist with rig up/down procedures
- Support other crew members as needed, ensuring compliance with safety procedures, and additional tasks assigned
Requirements and Qualifications:
- A minimum of 3 months of experience as a Derrickhand or equivalent experience in a related field
- Demonstrated ability to successfully complete all duties of a Floorhand and Motorhand
- Comfortable working at heights of 50 feet or greater
- Able to repetitively climb steep stairs and lift/carry 50 pounds independently
- Ability to frequently climb ladders and work while wearing a harness on an elevated platform
- Demonstrate clear communication skills, including reading, writing, and speaking English
- Understand and follow verbal and written instructions in English
- Bend, stoop, kneel, twist, and crawl throughout the tour work shift
- Clear vision to judge near and far distances to maintain awareness of surroundings
- Accurate recall over short and long-term memory
- Able to stay alert and focused up to 12.5 hours
- Maintain spatial orientation and awareness to safely move around the work environment
Estimated Salary: $65,000 - $90,000 per year, based on location and experience.

Location: Patterson-UTI Drilling locations in the North Dakota region.
Rotational Schedule: 14 days on/14 days off, with 12.5 hour shifts that may include days/nights and weekends/holidays.
