Overview of the Role

Position Summary:

MedStar Medical Group is seeking a dedicated Medical Assistant to contribute to our healthcare services. The successful candidate will be a certified Medical Assistant who possesses strong interpersonal and patient care skills.

The Medical Assistant will engage in both clinical and administrative responsibilities within a MedStar Urgent Care environment, working under the guidance of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Responsibilities may encompass venipuncture, administering medications and vaccines, recording and documenting vital signs, assisting healthcare providers during patient examinations, and providing clerical support.

This role may require flexibility to work at various locations within the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist healthcare providers with clinical procedures, patient preparation, examinations, and education. Collaborate with the clinical care team to ensure efficient patient flow and manage patient volume. Prepare for scheduled patient visits and assess patients for preventive care needs, ongoing support, safety concerns, and potential fall risks. Conduct follow-ups for urgent care or transitional care needs and engage in motivational interviewing to support patients in disease management and community outreach.
  • Identify and report any actual or potential issues concerning patients, families, and staff. Participate in initiatives aimed at enhancing care quality and safety. Attend training sessions related to safety and infection control. Maintain compliance by managing temperature logs, ensuring medication supplies are current, and keeping emergency equipment in good condition.
  • Conduct specific patient and laboratory tests, including Point of Care Testing, tuberculosis skin tests, electrocardiograms, and pulmonary function tests. Document all activities in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR) and ensure appropriate follow-up for tests such as pap smears and mammograms.
  • Provide patient escorting and assist with discharge processes. Fulfill responsibilities related to infection prevention and environmental safety. Manage records of scheduled equipment maintenance and oversee drug and medical supply inventories. Conduct telephone screenings to gather patient information and document findings according to established protocols.
  • May perform intravenous catheter insertions for IV fluid therapy or medication administration, as well as urinary catheter management. Prepare and administer oral medications and injections as permitted. Utilize the EMR for proposing medication refills and complete requisitions for laboratory tests.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists within one year.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Experience in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent setting.
  • Preferred completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program and externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting.
  • For positions in Cardiology: Six months of experience in an ambulatory care medical office or a related degree in exercise physiology/science, or completion of a cardiac technician course is preferred.

This position offers a competitive salary within the range of $31.36.
