Reporting To: Director of Nursing

Job Overview:

The Infection Prevention Nurse plays a crucial role in managing the Infection Control Program. This position involves the systematic collection and evaluation of data in partnership with the healthcare team to deliver therapeutic, evidence-based care. The Infection Prevention Nurse collaborates with the team to formulate care plans and documents progress towards achieving established outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assess the effectiveness and needs of the infection control program.
  2. Develop and plan services while organizing and coordinating their implementation.
  3. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of programs and services.
  4. Apply knowledge of epidemiology and public health practices to establish effective procedures and policies aimed at preventing disease transmission among residents and staff.
  5. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations.

Qualifications:

  1. Preferred education includes a four-year degree with at least one year of experience in healthcare or long-term care, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  3. A current, unencumbered RN or LPN license in the state(s) of practice is required.
  4. Availability to work scheduled hours, including some weekends.
  5. Completion of an approved Infection Preventionist course is necessary within 30 days of employment.
  6. Knowledge of short-term practices and familiarity with laws and regulations related to long-term care is preferred.
  7. Current CPR certification or ability to obtain it within 90 days of employment is required.
  8. Strong understanding of nursing and medical practices and procedures is necessary.
  9. Ability to make independent decisions when necessary.
  10. Leadership and supervisory skills to foster a positive working environment.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Ability to move throughout the workday.
  2. Capacity to manage the mental and emotional demands of the role.
  3. Good general health and emotional stability are essential.
  4. Ability to relate well to individuals in various states of health and emotional well-being.
  5. Compliance with facility health testing requirements is necessary.

Essential Functions:

  1. Ensure adherence to all infection control procedures as per established policies.
  2. Collaborate with all disciplines within the facility.
  3. Maintain an accurate and updated infection log.
  4. Oversee the Antibiotic Stewardship Program.
  5. Conduct daily observations of infection control processes across departments.
  6. Educate staff on infection control practices and assist with competency evaluations.
  7. Participate in various meetings and maintain a cooperative relationship with facility staff.
