Position Overview

The Emergency Services Patient Flow Specialist is responsible for overseeing the movement of patients within the emergency department, ensuring efficient admissions, transfers, and discharges. This role requires collaboration with clinical staff, including Clinical Coordinators, Nurses, and the Medical Team, to promote timely patient transitions through the department. The specialist will assist in directing patients from triage to various areas of the emergency department based on their mode of arrival, medical condition, and primary complaints. This position supports departmental initiatives and key performance metrics, including turnaround times from arrival to triage, admission orders to disposition, and overall Length of Stay.

Key Responsibilities

  • Continuously coordinates and monitors patient flow, utilizing appropriate resources to facilitate timely admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Identifies and addresses barriers to the admission and transfer processes, proposing solutions and collaborating with emergency department management for implementation.
  • Fosters positive relationships with patients, their families, visitors, and staff, ensuring optimal staff productivity.
  • Collaborates closely with emergency department physicians to identify patients suitable for results pending, enhancing patient flow throughout the department.
  • Manages the intake of incoming EMS and direct transfers efficiently.
  • Ensures compliance with departmental metric standards, including door-to-triage, bed assignment-to-discharge, and door-to-discharge times.
  • Maintains awareness of throughput metrics and assists the department in achieving its goals, such as reducing left without being seen (LWBS) and Length of Stay (LOS).
  • Participates in emergency department councils and supports performance improvement initiatives related to patient flow.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year of experience in healthcare or administrative roles.

  • Preferred: Associate's degree.
  • Exceptional customer service, problem-solving, critical thinking, and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively and demonstrate strong time management.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to learn and utilize relevant software applications.
  • Capable of working collaboratively under the guidance of Registered Nurses, Clinical Coordinators, and Nursing Leaders.
