Job Summary

We are looking for a dynamic Fire Protection Engineer with outstanding technical and problem-solving abilities to support our Fire Protection Program. The successful candidate will work closely with our Fire Protection Program Manager to ensure compliance with DOE contract requirements, NFPA codes and standards, and other applicable statutory requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Support the Fire Protection Program Manager in all Fire Protection Program related matters.
  • Provide Fire Protection Engineering technical support to the overall organization and mission.
  • Assist with implementation of the Fire Protection Program, perform peer reviews, and assist the Hanford Fire Marshal with fire investigations.
  • Assure that fire hazards are controlled/mitigated, that life safety is maintained, and that facilities and operations are in compliance with DOE contract requirements, NFPA codes and standards, and other applicable statutory requirements.
  • Support new and remodel construction activities by reviewing and contributing to project specifications, drawings, and other associated project documents.
  • Review and approve fire protection system inspection, testing, and maintenance work packages to assure compliance with NFPA and manufacturer recommendation/specifications.
  • Interface with the Hanford Fire Marshal and, when qualified as a Deputy Fire Marshal, will function on the behalf of the HFM in performing DFM responsibilities.
  • Disseminate fire protection information to management to keep them advised of changes, special problem issues, and/or new requirements related to the Fire Protection Program.
  • Establish and interpret fire protection policies, codes, standards, requirements, and maintain program procedures applicable to operations, activities, projects, and facilities.
  • Review and revise the Fire Hazard Analyses and write/revise Fire Hazards Evaluations.
  • Assist in requests for exemptions, variances, deviations, or equivalency evaluations from fire protection standards and requirements.
  • Perform fire protection facility assessments to determine compliance with applicable DOE Orders (DOE O 420.1C), and prescribed standards and ensures any deficiencies are maintained in the deficiency tracking system until corrected.
  • Perform comprehensive Fire Protection Program self-assessments.
  • Attend training courses to maintain proficiency in the mandatory fire protection standards of the program.
  • Assist with the fire protection overview of subcontractor activities and facilities.
  • Provide technical assistance to DOE.
Requirements
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • BS in Fire Protection Engineering, Engineering, or related technical field with 7-10 years of relevant experience.
    • Familiarity with International Building Code, NFPA, Federal and state occupational safety and health requirements that impact facility safety and equipment design.
    • Meets the qualifications for Professional Member Grade in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers OR has a Professional Member grade in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers OR is a Registered Professional Fire Protection Engineer.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Current appointment as Hanford Deputy Fire Marshal.
    • Experience supporting an operating chemical laboratory.
    • At least 5 years' experience performing Fire Protection Engineering duties at any DOE Complex, DOE National Laboratory, or commercial nuclear power plant.
    • Understanding of and demonstrated previous application of DOE Orders/Standards.
