Job Overview

The Sustaining Engineering team plays a vital role in enhancing various open source software by addressing software issues reported by clients. The software ecosystem encompasses everything from the kernel to user space applications and IaaS platforms. This position oversees one of our regional teams and is among several managers who report directly to the global Director of Sustaining Engineering.

Our clientele develops large-scale, mission-critical infrastructure and application solutions on Ubuntu and other open source technologies from Canonical. While not directly involved in product development, the Sustaining Engineering team, as part of Support Engineering, resolves issues for clients and contributes to the broader Open Source community. This team is well-equipped with experts across all time zones, ensuring a healthy work-life balance and continuous professional development for each member.

Daily Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage a distributed team of engineers
  • Recruit, coach, mentor, and provide constructive feedback for team members
  • Oversee and evaluate key performance indicators (KPIs) and training initiatives
  • Facilitate timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and technical solutions across various technology domains, including but not limited to Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju, and MAAS
  • Exemplify Canonical's values in customer interactions
  • Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders
  • Promote and advance modern software development methodologies
  • Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values
  • Collaborate with other teams within the organization
  • Work remotely with occasional global travel for internal and external events
Candidate Profile
  • Professional experience in software delivery using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar languages
  • A strong knowledge and passion for software development
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to organize and prioritize complex problem-solving and bug resolution
  • Familiarity with version control systems such as Git
  • Experience with debugging tools like GDB, Crash, or others
  • Commitment to testing methodologies and maintaining high code quality
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Experience with Linux, particularly Ubuntu
  • Familiarity with Open Source and Open Source Business Models
  • Experience in people management within a support organization is a significant advantage
