Description

Under the guidance of the shift sergeant or staff sergeant, with oversight from public safety captains and the Director of Public Safety, this role is essential in safeguarding lives and property through the enforcement of laws and regulations, as well as executing general firefighting duties. The position entails specialized responsibilities during emergencies, performing various maintenance tasks, and undertaking related activities as necessary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Uphold the laws and regulations of the City of East Grand Rapids and the State of Michigan.
  • Apprehend individuals violating the law.
  • Issue citations for parking, traffic, and equipment infractions.
  • Respond to emergency calls from the department.
  • Provide first aid and coordinate transportation for injured individuals.
  • Patrol designated areas, including school zones during crossing hours, and may serve as a crossing guard when needed.
  • Testify in court proceedings.
  • Prepare and maintain necessary records and reports.
  • Investigate and address complaints and legal violations, interviewing suspects, witnesses, and complainants to gather information and evidence.
  • Serve subpoenas and warrants.
  • Respond to fire alarms, connect hoses, and engage in firefighting activities.
  • Drive fire apparatus to fire scenes, operate ladders, and utilize firefighting equipment effectively.
  • Participate in fire prevention inspections.
  • Conduct general maintenance of firefighting equipment.
  • Develop and maintain specialized skills as required.
  • Stay informed on all departmental orders, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of motor vehicle laws and ordinances.
  • Exhibit driving proficiency in departmental vehicles during both emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Perform any additional duties assigned by the Director or their designee.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 60 college credit hours, ideally in Criminal Justice, Fire Science, or a related field.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Possess good moral character as determined by a comprehensive background investigation.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must successfully complete the MCOLES mandatory basic training.
  • Physically and psychologically fit for duty.
  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • MCOLES certification is required.
  • Firefighter I & II certification, or the ability to obtain it.
  • Medical First Responder certification or the ability to obtain it.
  • Proficient in computer use, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Ability to effectively read and write reports and communications relevant to the job.
  • Demonstrate composure in high-stress situations and effectively manage conflicts.
  • Proficient in the use of firearms or willing to undergo training.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Capable of passing a pre-employment physical agility test.
