San Francisco, California, United States PetsApp Full time
Position Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated process engineer who identifies as a "builder" ready to transform chemical engineering concepts into functional prototypes and advance them into pilot systems.

Your contributions will be crucial in the development and scaling of our primary technology platform, which focuses on generating fermentation feedstocks from byproducts of the food industry that contain lignocellulosic biomass.

This role will engage during the research and development phase, assisting in the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of our pilot systems in collaboration with our team of process and mechanical engineers.

The process development engineer will be deeply involved in hands-on research and development, devising innovative solutions to meet our technical goals while taking on various responsibilities.

Our ideal candidate thrives in dynamic and fast-paced environments, demonstrating a strong ability to execute tasks and take ownership of outcomes, even when they fall outside their immediate expertise.

As part of a small team, flexibility and a willingness to tackle diverse tasks are essential. Candidates should be adept at managing their time effectively and embracing accountability.

This individual must be prepared to adapt to shifting priorities quickly and should not hesitate to seek clarity when faced with undefined tasks or workstreams.

Lastly, a passion for combating climate change through biomanufacturing, enthusiasm for building a company from the ground up, and strong communication skills within a team setting are vital.

This position reports to the Associate Director of Process Development and involves collaboration with partner labs.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Develop and refine technical processes for converting lignocellulosic biomass into fermentation feedstocks, emphasizing pretreatment and hydrolysis.
  • Travel to partner labs to conduct experiments and enhance expertise in our processes.
  • Contribute to the creation of data architectures and engineering process models.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain equipment such as reactors, mills, filtration systems, and evaporators.
  • Identify key challenges related to scaling up processes and communicate improvement areas to the broader technical team and leadership.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to advance technology commercialization, aligning experimental design and project deliverables with business objectives.
  • Thoroughly document experiments and results, implementing systems for data management and process standardization.
  • Assist in developing safety systems and practices.
  • Engage effectively with vendors.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in chemical engineering or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of industry experience in process research and development, particularly in chemical reactions and separations.
  • Experience with lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis is a plus; familiarity with analytics is also desirable.
  • Prior experience in a startup environment.
  • A strong appetite for a fast-paced, hands-on startup culture.
  • Demonstrated effective time management skills and a high sense of urgency.
  • Willingness to travel for experiments at partner labs.

Competencies:
  • Strong proficiency in modeling software tools.
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Highly autonomous, self-motivated, and solutions-oriented.
  • Strong work ethic and resilience in the face of challenges.
  • A willingness to explore new possibilities and push boundaries.
  • A deep understanding of or eagerness to learn about waste-to-value, food waste, biomanufacturing, and fermentation.

Outcomes:

Success in this role will be measured by:

  • Designing and scaling processes to Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3-4 within the initial months.
  • Building a pilot system according to the technical development timeline.
  • Collaborating with partner labs and the team to select inputs within the early stages.

Benefits:
  • Competitive annual salary based on experience.
  • 401k plan.
  • Generous vacation policy, including paid holidays and sick leave.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • In-office snacks and beverages.
  • Weekly team lunches.
