Job Title: Part-Time Interdisciplinary Studies Instructor

We are seeking a part-time faculty member in Interdisciplinary Studies to join our team at the San Mateo County Community College District.

About the Position

This is a pool position, which means that openings may or may not be currently available. The ideal candidate will share our commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.

Responsibilities
  • Teach classes as assigned from the regular Interdisciplinary Studies curriculum
  • Assist in curriculum assessment and revisions and new course development
  • Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
  • Maintain expertise in current teaching methodologies and curricula
  • Perform other professional duties as required by contract and general institutional needs
Qualifications
  • Possession of a Master's or above in the interdisciplinary area OR Master's or above in one of the disciplines included in the interdisciplinary area and upper division or graduate course work in at least one other constituent discipline OR the equivalent
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
  • Experience in developing effective contextualized teaching and learning strategies for first-year students, middle college students, and high school students
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Teaching experience in the discipline, including developmental reading and writing, learning skills, tutoring, and college success; community college level preferred
  • Understanding and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college
  • Ability to organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students with different abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experiences
  • Knowledge of and experience with technology and programs applicable to classroom teaching (i.e. multimedia methods of instruction)
  • Currency in brain-based learning and adult learning theory
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to make a positive contribution to Interdisciplinary Studies and the Academic Support and Learning Technologies Division
