Job Summary

The Research Manager will oversee the operations of the Research Section in the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) and HamesNet. This role will manage the research section team, including grant program managers, public health analysts, research associates, research assistants, community coordinators, and administrative staff. The Research Manager will be responsible for implementing research and community engagement activities, supervising staff, and managing day-to-day administrative, business, and financial operations for the DFCM Research Section, including HamesNet.

Responsibilities
  • Grant Fiscal Management: Directs all aspects of DFCM Research Section Budgets, including extramural grants. Reviews and approves all budgets for research processes, including internal and external submissions for grants, contracts, and awards. Executes DCFM Research Section funds according to grant requirements, including ordering of supplies, equipment, and approval of travel funds.
  • Leadership: Lead and supervise all staff, post-doctoral researchers, and student workers in the Research Section and throughout HamesNet. Screen applications, interview candidates, and either make selection decisions or recommend individuals for hire in the Research Section. Train and assign work to new and current employees, including all training for human subjects research regulatory processes. Implement staff support for all grant-funded work. Provide guidance on performance standards and university procedures. Independently conduct performance evaluations, including communication with subordinates. Make recommendations for employee incentive awards and salary increases, including merits and reclassifications.
  • Research Administration: Provide oversight and coordination for standard administrative functions across the DFCM Research Section. Organize and direct regular research staff meetings. Organize and direct regular HamesNet meetings. Organize grant team meetings. Regular liaison with research managers in other departments, schools, and units across the university. Manage office space needs. Inform, educate, and conduct in-service for research staff and clinicians regarding overall research protocols and procedures. Prepare and disseminate Research Section Annual Report. Prepare and disseminate HamesNet Annual Report.
  • Logistics: Monitor administrative workflow and process with a view toward innovation and efficiency. Develop long-term operational strategies, working closely with the Vice Chair of Research, to meet DFCM Research Section objectives and ensure team members have relevant resources. Develop long-term operational strategy for HamesNet. Employ data analytics and assessments to produce evaluative reports and improve efficiencies.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. from an accredited college or university with a minimum of one year directly applicable experience; previous supervisory experience. Alternatively, a Master's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of five years' progressive grant management, resources management, and quality assurance program development experience; or major coursework completed on a Ph.D. in a related scientific field with two years of progressive grant management, resources management, and quality assurance program development experience; previous supervisory experience. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of eight years' progressive grant management, resources management, and quality assurance program development experience; previous supervisory experience is also acceptable.

The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, be detail-oriented, and proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases. The ability to maintain confidentiality, excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases are essential.
