Job Summary

The Health Technician - Orthopedic Fitter is a critical member of the Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service team at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System. This role requires a high level of technical expertise and attention to detail in the repair, fabrication, fitting, and dispensing of orthotic appliances.

Key Responsibilities
  • Apply, adjust, and remove casts, assemble traction apparatus, and fit strappings and splints for orthopedic patients.
  • Perform proper application of aseptic techniques in dressing changes and setting up surgical fields.
  • Assist Orthopedic Surgeons in reduction of fractures, trim plaster, remove whole and broken casts, and alter position of cast to change setting of patients' limb or body part.
  • Rig pulleys, ropes, and frames to assemble fracture beds.
  • Attach traction supports to patient's limb and adjust support to specified tension.
  • Apply casts to patients with fractured bones of the muscular skeletal system and extremities, i.e. the neck, shoulder, back, hip, knee, ankle, and hand.
  • Attach walking heels or other types of reinforcements to casts.
  • Determine whether patients require cast alterations, removals, and reapplications at regular cast appointments or while rounding on the wards.
  • Assist in the application, removal, and reapplication of immediate post-surgery prosthesis, either above or below the knee, which enables the patient to ambulate.
  • Assist the podiatrist in the care of the emergency podiatry patient.
  • Assist in the manufacturing of various shoe inserts that must be cut, trimmed, and fitted to the patient's particular needs.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • May be required to serve a probationary period.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • Participation in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP).
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/18/2024. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS-07: Specialized Experience: You must at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal Service that has given you the technician experience that required application of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Health Technician (Orthotic Fitter).

Examples of specialized experience would typically include but are not limited to: a working knowledge of human anatomy and application of correlating orthopedic supports, splinting, or other treatments related to injury of the human musculoskeletal system. Knowledgeable in the use of hand tools and machine tools including measurement and cutting instruments, drills, grinders, and sanders. Fabricates and repairs orthotics and adjusts orthopedic devices. Makes entries to patient chart to record provision of orthotic devices to patient and assists in the education of patient in use of device.

OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed one (1) year of graduate level education (or 18 semester hours) that is directly related to the work of the position to be filled.

OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have equivalent combinations of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate education as described above to meet the total experience requirements to qualify at this grade level.

The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of this position.
