Labor and Delivery Unit Overview:
The Labor and Delivery Unit (6JPP) comprises a 15-bed facility featuring various labor, triage, and recovery rooms, alongside 2 operating rooms and 1 procedure room. This unit caters to both low and high-risk pregnancies, providing comprehensive care for conditions such as pre-eclampsia, preterm labor, diabetes, cardiovascular issues, bleeding complications, and fetal disorders. We support both medicated and unmedicated labor through diverse techniques, with deliveries managed by obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, and family practice physicians.
Key Responsibilities of Staff Nurses:
- Utilizes nursing theory for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness.
- Evaluates patient healthcare preferences and expectations.
- Coordinates care across various settings collaboratively.
- Creates patient care plans tailored to individual conditions, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic factors, prescribing interventions to achieve desired outcomes.
- Implements care plans based on patient priorities, including interventions identified through nursing diagnoses.
- Records and reports interventions and patient/family responses.
- Integrates contributions from patients and families into a multidisciplinary care plan.
- Develops, coordinates, and executes transfer/discharge planning throughout the care episode.
- Follows department, division, and unit policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff, adhering to universal precautions.
Salary Information: Starting at $60,000 at 100% effort, with variations based on experience and effort percentage.
Pay Differentials: Shift differentials for evening, night, and weekend shifts, along with premium pay for additional shifts exceeding 4 hours. Inpatient differentials can reach up to $5,000 annually.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills with patients, families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members through effective communication.
- Basic computer skills are necessary.
- A current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by the date of hire.
- A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or a Master's Degree in Nursing is highly preferred.
- If a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable.
- Familiarity with university policies and procedures is advantageous.
