Job Purpose Statement:
The role of Support Specialist for Medically Fragile Students is designed to assist in the overall physical care and educational guidance of students with medical fragility. This includes implementing tailored educational programs, modifying lesson plans, and aiding students in developing essential daily living and behavioral skills. Additionally, the position involves performing various specialized health care tasks based on individual student needs, thereby relieving educators of routine clerical and instructional responsibilities.

Essential Job Functions:

Modifies classroom assignments and homework under the teacher's direction to provide support and reinforce educational objectives.

Administers assessments, homework, and make-up assignments to assist teachers in evaluating student progress and recognizing individual needs.

Provides assistance to students in medication administration, personal hygiene tasks, food preparation, feeding, and specialized medical care as required.

Aids in the implementation of educational programs tailored to meet individual student needs, including the use of media, computer applications, and direct learning activities.

Supports the achievement of physical, occupational, and speech therapy goals.

Engages in discussions with educators and district personnel to assist in evaluating student progress and implementing individualized objectives.

Monitors students in various settings to ensure a safe and positive environment. Operates basic medical and instructional equipment and adapts to technological tools as assigned. Participates in meetings to share information and enhance professional skills. Performs record-keeping and clerical tasks to support the teacher in maintaining student documentation and providing necessary classroom materials.

Other Job Functions: Assists colleagues as needed to support their work activities. Provides first aid in emergencies, such as seizures or respiratory distress, to address immediate safety concerns.

Attends district training sessions conducted by a registered nurse on specialized healthcare procedures prior to assisting with specific health tasks.


Job Requirements - Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics, including fractions, percentages, and ratios, along with the ability to read various manuals and communicate effectively in writing and speaking.
Proficient in typing correspondence and reports, with the ability to follow detailed multi-step instructions. Competent in keyboard and computer usage.

Specific skills include applying relevant codes, policies, and regulations; communicating with individuals from diverse backgrounds; operating standard office equipment; maintaining accurate records; and utilizing appropriate software applications.

Ability to manage complex tasks that require coordination of schedules and activities, exercising discretion and independent judgment while interacting with diverse individuals and changing agendas.

Specific abilities include adherence to safety protocols, attention to detail, implementation of established curricula, meeting deadlines, and working effectively with at-risk populations. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

Working Environment:

The job functions are primarily performed in an indoor setting, necessitating significant physical abilities such as reaching, handling, and sensory skills including speaking, hearing, and vision. May require the use of mobility aids in the care of students.

Educational Requirements:
A high school diploma or equivalent, or a combination of relevant experience and education in the specialized field.

Experience Requirements:
A minimum of one year of job-related experience.

Licensing, Certification, Testing Requirements:
Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance; Tuberculosis clearance; Current CPR and First Aid certifications (online courses are not acceptable). Must meet all Federal/State/District requirements.

High school diploma or equivalent; Current CPR/First Aid certifications; Online courses for CPR/First Aid not accepted.
