Mechanic Position

We are seeking a skilled Mechanic to join our team at Comal County, TX. As a key member of our transportation department, you will be responsible for performing routine maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
Key Responsibilities- Perform preventive maintenance checks, services, and repairs on cars and light trucks in the areas of electrical, brakes, steering and suspension, heating and air conditioning, and trailers.
- Perform preventive maintenance checks, services, and repairs on medium and heavy-duty trucks, construction, and agricultural equipment in the areas of electrical, brakes, steering and suspension, HVAC, and trailers.
- Perform State of Texas vehicle inspections and issue annual state safety inspection certificates.
- Road test equipment: drive trucks or equipment as required; inspect vehicles in the shop and field.
- Read and interpret printed and electronic manuals, drawings, and specifications.
- Use and maintain a full set of hand, power, and shop tools. Use test lights, multi-meters, precision measuring devices, and hand-held diagnostic equipment.
- Observe safe work methods and utilize safety equipment related to the work; safely handle and dispose of hazardous waste materials.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required; one (1) year of vehicle maintenance experience or equivalent automotive/diesel vocational school graduate.
- Must be able to read & understand Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used as part of the job; as well as applicable safety rules & regulations.
- Must possess and maintain a minimum of a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank vehicle and air brake endorsement.
- Possess and maintain the State of Texas vehicle inspector license or be able to pass the state exam within six (6) months of hire and maintain the vehicle inspector license through the course of employment with Comal County.
- ASE certifications preferred, but not required in either: T4 Brakes, T5 Suspension & Steering, T6 Electrical/ Electronic Systems, T7 Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning, T8 Preventive Maintenance Inspection, A4 Suspension and Steering, A5 Brakes, A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, A7 Heating & Air Conditioning.

Normal work hours for this position is Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM with 30 minutes for lunch (equals a 40-hour workweek). Staffing needs and operational demands may necessitate variations in starting and ending times, as well as variations in the total hours that may be scheduled each day of the week, as deemed necessary by the County Engineer.
This position requires safety boots at all times, which Comal County will provide. These safety boots will only be used for work-related activity as part of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Employees reporting to work without safety boots will not be allowed to work and will not be paid for the time required to retrieve safety boots.
