Deputy Sheriff

The Deputy Sheriff is a critical role in preserving law and order, enforcing state laws, and protecting the constitutional rights of all persons. This position requires a strong sense of community engagement, effective communication skills, and the ability to work in stressful environments while maintaining self-control and good judgment.

• Patrol roadways, lakes, and trails on private and public property to observe for any traffic offenses, crimes against persons or property, and safety concerns.
• Investigate all calls for service and observed incidents, interviewing witnesses, suspects, and victims, and taking photos, impressions of tracks and/or marks, dusting for fingerprints, collecting physical evidence, and conducting surveillance.
• Respond to calls for service such as death, medical emergencies, crimes against people and property, safety concerns, and public nuisances, taking action appropriate to the situation.
• Document all calls for service and observed incidents through written reports, completing appropriate federal, state, county, and local forms.
• Serve as an arm of the court, serving or executing all criminal and civil writs, arrest warrants, search warrants, summons, and other processes, and certifying same to court.
• Process inmates into county jail, maintaining both physical and verbal control of inmate, completing pre-booking paperwork, searches prisoners, evaluates medical needs, inventories and protects personal belongings, and checks criminal histories.
• Operate and maintain vehicles, computers, radar, PBT, Intoxilyzer/DMT, camera, firearms, radios, sirens, and emergency lighting, documenting all calibrations and maintaining qualifications for use of equipment.
• Speak to student groups and the general public on various law enforcement and safety issues, coordinating and/or assisting with community education events.
• Testify in civil and criminal court cases.
• Transport adult and juvenile prisoners from arrest location to/from jail, court, detention facilities, and medical facilities, transporting mentally ill, disabled, or inebriated individuals to appropriate treatment facilities.
• Maintain and demonstrate proficiency with required skills such as firearm use, pursuit driving, defensive tactics, Crisis Intervention, De-escalation training, and Use of Force training and requirements.
• Attend classes regarding new and revised laws, and policies and procedures, maintaining Minnesota P.O.S.T. License by completing mandated continuing education credits, and Minnesota P.O.S.T. qualification requirements.

• High School graduate
• 2 or more years education in Law Enforcement
• 1-2 years experience
• POST licensed or eligible
• Valid driver's license
• Pass psychological and physical examination
• Pass background investigation
• Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays
