Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join our team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The successful candidate will have a strong background in power systems engineering, with a focus on design, analysis, and testing. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated and experienced engineer to take on a leadership role and contribute to the growth and success of our company.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop electrical power systems, including substations, switchgear, and motor control centers.
  • Perform power factor analysis and correction, including the installation of power quality meters and the conduct of analysis, harmonic modeling, and grounding analysis.
  • Troubleshoot switchgear controls and relay protection systems.
  • Conduct short-circuit, protective device coordination, and arc-flash studies.
  • Mentor and lead a team of Power Systems Electrical Engineers in the support of our customers.
  • Ensure that all engineering work is conducted in accordance with IEEE and NFPA standards, and Shermco excellence.
  • Review and approve ongoing and completed engineering work, ensuring deadlines are met and work is completed with accuracy and high quality.
  • Occasionally work in the field, assisting on shut-downs, startups, and maintenance projects.
  • Make onsite visits to customer sites, interact with customers, and gather critical information to resolve project issues and customer concerns.
  • Work with sales staff on the estimating and bidding of new projects, and co-present project proposals to prospective customers.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, with a focus on Power Systems studies.
  • Licensed Electrical Engineer in the State of Iowa, or the ability to attain in 6 months.
  • At least 5 years of field experience in power systems, preferably with electrical switchgear commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge and experience with short-circuit, protective device coordination, arc-flash, and power quality studies.
  • Previous experience with SKM, ETAP, or EasyPower system modeling software is desired.
  • Experience with low and medium voltage applications, with high-voltage experience a plus.
  • Experience applying and testing protection relays, with a working knowledge of relay logic implementation with Schweitzer (SEL), Basler, GE, ABB, and Siemens relays.
  • Prefer utility design experience or the ability to quickly learn.
  • Willingness to be hands-on and work in the field alongside our field engineers and field technicians during customer outage periods.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate in English via verbal and written methods to customers and co-workers.
  • Previous supervisory or project leadership experience is a plus.
