Mass General Brigham is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to fill the role of Professional Development Leader - Cardiac Medicine & Surgery. This position will be responsible for designing, coordinating, and implementing programs for staff development, education, research, quality, and defining and implementing evidence-based practice in the Cardiac Medicine & Surgery department.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Participate in leadership strategic planning meetings to align with the department's goals and objectives.
  • Apply theoretical and experiential knowledge of nursing practice to determine project and program strategies related to staff competency, new programs, new technologies, research, and evidence-based practice.
  • Provide expertise, direction, and be responsible for the development of goals and objectives for educational programs.
  • Lead evidence-based practice initiatives to improve patient outcomes and staff satisfaction.
  • Provide leadership coverage for patient care and nursing practice in the absence of a Nurse Director.
  • Participate in hiring, evaluations, discipline, corrective action plans, and workplace investigations.
  • Conduct annual and ongoing evaluation of nurses, patient care assistants, emergency services assistants, and medical assistants and provide formal and informal feedback.
  • Identify learning needs and develop and implement programs for patient education within the area of specialization.
  • Facilitate the acquisition of advanced clinical skills in clinical staff nurses and graduate students through role modeling, practice, coaching, and consultation in the clinical setting.
  • Participate in development of programs/systems to meet the requirements of state and federal regulatory agencies to ensure compliance.
  • Participate in hospital surveys to ensure quality and safety standards are met.
  • Encourage and recommend nurses for committee work based on their interest and clinical expertise.
  • Represent the Chief Nursing Officer/Associate Chief Nurse/Executive Director on committees as needed.
  • Develop and/or revise policies/guidelines based on changes in practice, new research findings/equipment, or products along with ensuring education/in-servicing is completed.
  • Communicate clear expectations for BWH/Department of Nursing quality initiatives and outcomes measures and strategies to enhance performance measures.
  • Lead quality and safety efforts while promoting a just culture framework.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and implement/support improvement efforts.
Fiscal Management:
  • Create a budget for programmatic work and monitor expenditures in accordance with budget allocations.
  • Provide recommendations for capital budget purchases.
  • Promote cost-effective delivery of care and programs and keep within budget.
  • Determine training resource requirements for designated programs.
Professional Development:
  • Participate in and present at hospital and service line committees, councils, and educational programs.
  • Keep current on issues, practice, and new trends related to environment of care, technology, and supplies and the education of professional and non-professional care coordination personnel.
  • Maintain and update clinical knowledge and skills based on current nursing and health care practices.
  • Identify own learning needs and goals, and design a plan to meet them.
  • Support the nursing professional practice model and care delivery model.
  • Participate in annual peer feedback.
  • Participate in activities that foster peer support and networking.
  • Fulfill professional role through involvement in professional organization activities, presentations, and publications.
Professional Relationships:
  • Demonstrate professional, courteous, and respectful demeanor in working with patients, families, staff, and providers.
  • Collaborate with inter-professional teams on identified programs/projects.
Research Responsibilities:
  • Use nursing theories and research findings to plan, design, and evaluate nursing practice and to generate researchable clinical problems.
  • Promote staff and student utilization of the research process.
  • Utilize scientific method in collecting data on clinical practice issues.
  • Have knowledge of the IRB process.
  • Identify research questions and pursue opportunities to fund and implement research.
  • Apply for research grants and participate in hospital research initiatives as applicable.
  • Present locally, nationally, or internationally about research findings and engage in other educational activities, such as publications, consultations, and courses.
  • Remain current with clinical research to ensure scholarly and innovative nursing practice.
