Pharmacy Technician Job Description

Ansible Government Solutions, LLC is seeking a highly skilled Pharmacy Technician to join our team in support of the Carl T. Hayden Veterans' Administration Medical Center. As a Pharmacy Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the efficient and accurate preparation and dispensing of medications to our patients.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and dispense medications, including sterile compounded products, and maintain related records for patients.
  • Prepare, package, label, and distribute medication doses prescribed by physicians.
  • Maintain inventories of drugs and supplies, stocking shelves, rotating stock, and checking expiration dates of pharmaceuticals.
  • Fills/stocks medications in various automated devices; documenting lot and expiration date into computerized logs.
  • Operate various types of pharmacy automation, including Med Carousel, ScriptPro, Pick Point, and Omnicell automated dispensing equipment.
  • Read computer screens, use scanning equipment, select specific drugs/products required to fill an order by name, strength, and National Drug Code (NDC) number.
  • Clean cells and perform first-level preventative maintenance, including cleaning off lights, vacuuming, and making minor adjustments to equipment.
  • Process refill requests and print prescription labels using computerized software programs.
  • Answer telephone calls from patients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Refers to computerized prescription profiles to respond to inquiries from patients concerning disposition of prescriptions, obtains information or responds to questions within the technician scope of knowledge.
  • Document interactions with patients and staff appropriately, including documentation in the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) when required.
  • Replies to questions from patients regarding expired prescriptions, deleted or discontinued drugs, or unavailable drugs or prosthetic and/or ostomy devices.
  • Refers inquiries of a professional nature to a pharmacist.
  • Verifies patient identity prior to communicating patient health information with the patient, using two identifiers as defined by the medical center.
  • Participates in managing patient prescription processing time while meeting required department-specific metrics and monitors.
  • Organizes, files, and maintains dispensing documents, original prescriptions, and other required documentation in accordance with federal regulations and state laws.
  • Fills cassettes and ensures secondary technician review for automated counting equipment.
  • Inputs all pertinent information, including barcodes, cassettes, and expiration information into automated equipment using computerized software.
  • Performs inspections of assigned areas, including Outpatient clinics, Emergency Room, and Inpatient Pharmacy, ensuring proper stock rotation and expiration date/lot number validity.
  • Removes all expired medication during inspections and quarantines the expired items for return/destruction.
  • Electronically logs discharge, shuttled, runner, and tubed prescriptions using ScriptPro.
  • Notifies and/or clarifies orders needing special handling, i.e., refrigeration, with pharmacist and patient as necessary.
  • Delivers prepared totes to travel, ensuring disposition of items for Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) is initiated by transferring such items to the travel department.
  • Packages verified mail prescriptions in the appropriate mailer or box, ensuring proper handling, i.e., refrigeration or padding.
  • Sorts mail according to status, i.e., regular, certified, or UPS.
  • Scans and creates barcodes for robot prescription processing using dedicated computerized software programs.
  • Fills CBOC and primary care clinic orders, including Omnicell restock reports, ensuring a proper supply of medication is available.
  • Replenishes medications in clinics using sophisticated computer software: Omnicell, Pick Point.
  • Replenishes filling areas with vials, caps, labels, logbooks, paper bags, and other supplies as needed.
  • Communicates and interacts with internal and external customers, including patients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Operates the telephone, transferring calls and placing calls on hold, handling calls efficiently and appropriately.
  • Answers the door, allowing only authorized individuals to enter, and ensures visitors sign the visitor log and are escorted to necessary areas of the pharmacy.
  • Prepares and fills medication orders for bubble packing for State Veterans Home or Contracted Long-term care facilities as appropriate.
  • Processes audio renewal orders through notes or right-click-renew feature.
  • Processes refill mail slips through VISTA.
  • Routes prepared prescriptions to appropriate pneumatic tube stops.
Requirements:
  • US Citizen.
  • Certified by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
  • At least one year of experience in a hospital pharmacy setting (Inpatient or Outpatient).
  • Graduate of an Academic Technician Training Educational Program.
  • Ability to understand basic mathematical calculations.
  • Basic typing and PC computer skills.
  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
  • Fluent in English, reading, understanding, speaking, and writing.
  • No sponsorship available.
